WASHINGTON – White House communications director Jennifer Palmieri will resign her post in the West Wing in the coming weeks to work in the same capacity on the 2016 presidential election campaign of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, local media reported Thursday.
Palmieri is one of President Barack Obama’s main advisers and has played a key role in the relationship the administration has had with the media, first as adjunct director and later as the White House’s main communications official.
Her resignation comes after the announcement that another of the president’s top advisers, Dan Pfeiffer, who has worked for Obama since his 2008 presidential campaign, will also step down.
Pfeiffer is the only person on Obama’s first presidential campaign team to still be working in the White House within the president’s inner circle of advisers.
Before moving into the post of adviser, he was the White House communications chief and was involved in the strategy to push the use of digital media to reach new audiences.
The resignations come after others within the Obama administration, including that of the general coordinator for the White House’s response to the Ebola epidemic, Ron Klain, and that of top adviser John D. Podesta, who – according to The Washington Post – will also join Clinton’s campaign.
Clinton still has not officially announced her candidacy, but she is widely considered to be the Democratic Party’s “inevitable” presidential nominee and the official announcement of the launching of her campaign is expected to come this spring or summer.
