'The People's Nugget': Chinese Herdsman Finds Enormous Gold Nugget on Open Ground

2/6/2015

BEIJING – A herdsman in China’s northwestern province of Xinjiang has found a gold nugget weighing 7.85 kilograms (17 pounds) that was “practically lying on bare ground,” press reports said Thursday.

Berek Sawut, a man of Kazakh ethnicity from Qinghe county, made the extraordinary find Thursday, without having any idea that it could be worth up to $255,313, according to the state-controlled news agency Xinhua.

The gold nugget has a random shape and is 23 centimeters (9 inches) long, 18 centimeters (7 inches) wide and 8 centimeters (3 inches) thick.

It is extremely unusual to find gold nuggets lying on open ground as they are usually discovered deep inside mines.

Xinjiang, a large territory that accounts for about one-sixth of the entire area of China, has abundant natural resources, the most important ones being gold, coal, oil, natural gas and solar and wind energy.
