Gun owners react to Wendy Davis supporting open carry

02.17.2014

People across the Valley are sounding off Wendy Davis recent claim that she supports the open carry of handguns in public, a law currently banned in Texas.
In an interview, Davis also stated that she supports an expansion of gun right in Texas.
As of right now, Texas prohibits the open carry of handguns.
If you have a handgun you must conceal it.
Only long guns are allowed to be openly carried in Texas.
However the second amendment gives citizens the right to bear arms.
Some gun owners, like Jeremy Reiley, owner of Rio Gun Club, feels the second amendment is fading.
"Gun rights in general they been slowly taken away from and it’s in our constitutional right to own guns and to protect ourselves," Reiley said.
A total of 7 states prohibit openly carrying handguns: New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Arkansas, Texas, Illinois and Florida.
Reiley agrees there should be open carry in Texas.
However, Reiley says that those who chose to wear a gun on their hip openly in public should pass a background check and take a gun safety class.
"Anybody whether they are carrying a gun concealed or in their car or just a gun owner in general should have some sort of training," Reiley said. "At least demonstrate that they have are proficient, knowledgeable and safe when handling a firearm."
If open carry of handguns laws are passed here, it might lead to people openly armed at parks, shopping malls and restaurants.
"Firearms are very safe when they are handled properly but if they are not handled properly bad things can happen," Reiley said.
Right now, there are 11 states that allow open carry without citizens applying for a license: Alaska, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, South Dakota, Vermont, Kentucky and Virginia.
