Foreign Desease Outbreak Update: U.S. Extends Immigration Benefit for Hondurans, Nicaraguans

10/18/2014

WASHINGTON – The U.S. government on Friday extended for 18 months the Temporary Protected Status enjoyed by more than 83,000 Honduran migrants and some 4,200 people from Nicaragua.

Hondurans and Nicaraguans currently enrolled in TPS have until Dec. 15 to apply for renewal, which takes effect in January.

TPS, established to aid migrants from countries afflicted by natural disasters or civil war, allows beneficiaries to remain in the United States and obtain work permits.

Current TPS beneficiaries from Honduras and Nicaragua who now have work permits will receive new documents that are valid until July 5, 2016.

The U.S. government made TPS available to people from Honduras and Nicaragua after those countries suffered thousands of deaths and massive damage from Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

The benefit has been extended 12 times since then.
