A convicted sex offender is back behind bars after being accused of attacking a jogger near Mission High School.
Mission police arrested 36-year-old Aurelio Lopez Zarate on an unlawful restraint charge on Tuesday.
Investigators said the alleged attack happened while a woman was jogging near Mission High School on Monday.
The woman told police as she passed Zarate when he suddenly lunged at her and wrapped his arms around her waist.
She began screaming and was able to break free.
Police said the woman then waved down several drivers near the area who got out and helped scare the suspect away.
The victim and her husband were on their way to the Mission Police Department on Tuesday to do a follow up on a police report when she spotted Zarate walking away from the building.
Her husband chased the man while the woman alerted police officers who tackled Zarate while he tried to flee on foot.
Investigators told Action 4 News that they are unsure why Zarate attacked the woman or what his intentions were.
Public records show that he has been a registered sex offender in Mission since August 2008.
Investigators said Zarate came in to the police department on his birthday on Tuesday for his annual registration when the woman spotted him leaving.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Sex Offender website shows Zarate was required to register as a sex offender due a crime involving a female victim.
Records show that he was sentenced to 12 years and 7 months in prison back in November 2000.
Mission police said Zarate is currently on probation for a federal human smuggling charge.
His probation could be revoked because of the new charge.
Zarate remains in custody at the Hidalgo County Jail under a $100,000 dollar bond.
