BORDER UPDATE: Grenade detonates at TV station in Matamoros, injuries reported

2/11/2015

15 dead Since Last Weekend

An explosive device was thrown at a television station in Matamoros on Friday night, Mexican officials confirm.
The grenade injured two security guards at the Televisa television station around 9:30 p.m.
The two guards were rushed to the hospital for treatment on injuries they sustained while in the parking lot of the station in Matamoros, a city in Mexico bordering Brownsville, Texas.
The Television station is guarded by state and federal security, according to Mexican official reports.
Leticia Salazar, the mayor of Matamoros, took to social media to warn residents about the risks of leaving their homes during the heightened activity in the area.
Salazar said federal forces are working to restore peace in the area.
The explosive device thrown at the television station marks the second violent activity against media within days.
The editor of El Manana, a newspaper in Matamoros, was reportedly kidnapped and beat up before being released earlier this week.
Nine gunmen were killed in a day of violence as rolling gun battles broke out between Reynosa and Matamoros on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
A total of 15 have died since last weekend during a recent uptick in violence along the border, according to the Associated Press.
