The Gathering Storm: Church Control and Capitulation!

Winston Churchill wrote in The Gathering Storm, the first of his six volume set dealing with World War II, of the dark, foreboding storm clouds that began gathering over Europe following the end of World War I and the Versailles Treaty that was supposed to protect Europe against Germany’s future rearming to again threaten Europe. The free world’s failure to oppose Hitler and hold him to the treaty resulted in the world’s biggest bloodbath with the killing of about 80 million people!

AMERICA'S FASCIST MOVEMENT

09/15/13
Troy Senik - Center for Individual Freedom

In an age prone to political overstatement, words have a tendency to lose their currency. How many times in the 21st century have we heard words like “tyranny” or “totalitarian” thrown around in reference to the essentially stable world of American politics?

When the rhetoric clearly outpaces the reality, such pronouncements become meaningless – and we begin to assume that anyone who talks in such foreboding terms is at least slightly unhinged.

The danger, however, is that dismissing the Chicken Littles will lead us to reflexively ignore even legitimate concerns if they’re sufficiently dire – and that’s a problem because some of our national challenges really are that dramatic.

Case in point: the rising tide of fascism in American life.

To properly understand the threat, we must first strip the word of its non-essential connotations. One of the reasons that “fascism” has become such a toxic term is because of its deep-rooted association with Nazi Germany.

While Adolf Hitler’s reign certainly rested on a fascist substrate, that doesn’t mean that there’s anything going on in modern America that even remotely resembles the undiluted evil of the Third Reich. Nor is it necessarily of a piece with Benito Mussolini’s Italy. Those were aggressive, expansionist, malevolent forms of fascism. If anything, ours is a bland, therapeutic iteration.

So what then do we mean by fascism?

In essence, the fascist system is one that rejects any limiting principle upon government. In Mussolini’s famous formulation it stands for “Everything within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state.” That notion, of course, is irreconcilable with the conception of America advanced by the Founding Fathers. Theirs was a government of limited powers, with decision-making decentralized through federalism and the protection of individual liberties.

The fascist notion essentially assumes the infallibility of the state. The American alternative – recognizing that “the state” is nothing more than the flawed human beings who administer it – not only assumes fallibility, but also designs the entire system of government to quarantine its effects.

The more time goes by, however, the more those ramparts are breached. Beginning with the Progressive movement of the early 20th century, there was a concerted effort to erode limits on government power. It continued through the New Deal and the Great Society, and manifests itself in the present day in the government expansion overseen by President Obama and his liberal acolytes around the country.

We should note here a key distinction: Not all expansions of government are necessarily indicative of fascism. The hallmark of fascism is destroying the space that exists between the individual and the state; it’s a desire to crush civil society, the mechanism that allows free people to voluntarily organize on their own terms for their own purposes.

Particularly in America, such efforts usually don’t stem from people explicitly lusting for power. Rather, it’s often the work of do-gooders whose desire to create a better society inevitably leads them to strip away the freedoms of those who don’t share their vision.

Take, for instance, the increasing attacks on the right to free association. The New Mexico Supreme Court recently found that an Albuquerque couple that refused to photograph a lesbian commitment ceremony on the basis of their Christian beliefs had violated the state’s human rights law. An analogy can be made with ObamaCare’s insistence that religious employers provide access to contraception for their employees.

In both cases, one could disagree with the underlying views without accepting the notion that individuals should be compelled, by force of the law, to violate their deepest religious beliefs to satisfy government’s notion of “The Good.”

The freedom of religion is an essentially meaningless concept if that freedom is only operative in situations where it aligns with the values of the governing class.

One sees this impulse for the state to order private relations at every turn. What is ObamaCare if not an attempt to get doctors and patients – which is to say everyone in the country – to conduct one of life’s most private activities, medical treatment, along the lines of government dictates?

What is Common Core, the proposal to create national educational standards, if not an attempt to snuff out competing views on what children need to learn to become fully intellectually formed?

The reach of government even goes so far as dictating the offerings and calorie content of school lunches under First Lady Michelle Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (which is currently touching off a rebellion in schools throughout the nation).

That may seem a trifling example if you’re thinking of fascism in terms of brownshirts. For our purposes, however, its marginal importance is precisely the point.

Civil society can’t meaningfully exist with a state so expansive that it sees plucking the cheeseburger out of your child’s hands as a legitimate application of government power.

The Founding Fathers gave us a limited government of enumerated powers, constructed around the notion of protecting individual liberty. What we are currently cultivating, however, is a government that presumes to overrule the church on matters of faith, to overrule your doctor on matters of health, and to overrule parents on matters of childrearing. “Everything within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state.”

They Denied That We Were In A Depression In 1933 And They Are Doing It Again In 2013

09/15/13

The more things change, the more things stay the same.  The Great Depression actually started in 1929, but as you will see below, as late as 1933 the Associated Press was still pumping out lots of news stories with optimistic economic headlines and many Americans still did not believe that we were actually in a depression.  And of course we are experiencing a very similar thing today.  The United States is inthe worst financial shape that it has ever been in, our economic infrastructure is being systematically gutted, and poverty isabsolutely exploding.  Since the stock market crash of 2008, the Federal Reserve has been wildly printing money and the federal government has been running trillion dollar deficits in a desperate attempt to stabilize things, but in the process they have made our long-term economic problems far worse.  It would be hard to overstate how dire our situation is, and yet the mainstream media continues to assure us that everything is just fine and that happy days are here again.
As I have already noted, the mainstream media was doing the exact same thing back during the days of the Great Depression.  The following are actual Associated Press headlines from 1933...

Benghazi Update: Jeb Bush presents undeserving Hillary Clinton with Liberty Medal

HOUSTON, September 13, 2013  - On Tuesday September 10, Jeb Bush, chairman of the board for the National Constitution Center and former governor of Florida, presented former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with the group’s annual Liberty Medal. It is widely speculated that both Bush and Clinton will run for their party’s nomination for the presidency in 2016.

It is hard to understand why Gov. Bush would want to bolster Secretary Clinton’s credentials in such a way. Her actual lifetime accomplishments are so razor thin that an award celebrating her lifetime accomplisments presented by a likely Republican presidential candidate will drastically help her in this regard.

That Sinking Feeling and The President’s Next Act: Blaming the GOP For Government Shutdown He Will Engineer

Jobs, not Syria, target outside Beltway

09/15/13

Champion, Pa - Tracey loaded three large cardboard boxes with tomatoes, peaches, green beans, cucumbers and fleshy beets for a young couple about to embark on their first adventure in the art of canning.

Rows of perfectly presented vegetables lined the shelves of her family's farmers market, where state Route 31 meets the base of a mountain.
The young couple peppered her with questions about “putting up” their produce as they recalled watching their parents filling cellars with canned vegetables and fruits that lasted from autumn through spring.
They also chatted about jobs and ways to cut corners; all three expressed worry about an economy that has not improved for more than a half-decade.
Behind them in line, a group of young people discussed the possibility of war with Syria — all of them astonished that this is what the White House is focused on.
“We keep waiting for the White House to talk about jobs in a meaningful, constructive way so that our families, communities and schools stop crumbling,” said one young woman as she contemplated buying fresh honey.
Americans are suffering in ways Washington doesn't grasp.
If you drive the 140 miles from this spot into the nation's capital, the first 125 miles look about the same — farms, small towns and remnants of a once-thriving industrial livelihood barely holding on, creating a ripple effect for schools, police and fire forces facing steep budget cuts because of lost tax bases.
The moment you enter Rockville, Md., and eventually exit onto Connecticut Avenue toward the heart of Washington, your senses are drenched in prosperity; shops overflow with people, every off-street is gentrified, construction is everywhere — and good luck finding a decent place to eat without an hour's wait.
Organic-food stands mimic Tracey's Somerset County farmers market — except that the prices are tripled and her warm service is replaced with a polite but vacant exchange.
Down the cross-section of numbered avenues to the White House, President Barack Obama is beating the war drums on Syria; he has reset, walked back or wavered over striking that war-torn country because of its regime's alleged chemical attack on its own people.
His message has been weak, vacillating and downright confusing not only to Congress and to international allies but, by their own admission, to his staff.
Historian David Peitrusza believes this bottomless disconnect with Americans' needs and the president's naked indecisiveness on war is shockingly unparalleled. And historians are rarely, if ever, stumped for historical parallels.
“Obama's ill-conceived, badly executed, unnecessary and profoundly unpopular Syrian adventure remains without precedent in American history,” said Peitrusza. “There is finally something new under the sun and, while it is not anything demanded by or of any utility to the American people, it may prove to be of some genuine value to them in facing this White House's shortcomings.”
Back at the farmers market, a brilliant American flag dances in the slightly cool breeze that signals summer is escaping and fall is around the corner.
In fact, the length of Glades Pike Road — the old name for Route 31, back when it was an artery of the Underground Railroad — is lined with farms graced by flags posted alongside natural-gas wells that help many small family farms survive in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
On a back road, a handmade sign jutting from the weeds declares, “Stay out of Syria” — a reminder of what national polls show: Americans passionately (by 63 percent, in a recent Pew survey) oppose Obama's plan to intervene in that country.
They are equally dissatisfied with his handling of the economy: His approval plummeted to 35 percent (in a Gallup survey) long before news that, for a fifth year, there was no “summer of recovery” and the percentage of Americans working or looking for work has fallen to its lowest level since 1978.
Those who work in or report on the White House live in a protective bubble humming with commerce; they don't understand why folks out here are restless and unsatisfied, unhappy with the thought of another war, weary of the lack of backbone on the economy.
The folks outside Washington want action — just not the kind that this blundering White House is trying to sell.

Re: The impact of endorsements

09/15/13

Allahpundit asked an interesting exit question at the end of his post on John McCain’s possible retirement:
Exit question for righties who think a McCain endorsement of Hillary over Paul would mean nothing to anyone: You sure?
Actually, yeah, I’m pretty sure it won’t mean anything, but not because of McCain’s relative draw within the GOP or with independents.  I just don’t think endorsements at this level have any impact on the fortunes of candidates with near-total saturation with voters already.  Endorsements matter for obscure candidates, perhaps especially in local elections, but also in House and Senate races for newcomers.  A well-placed endorsement will allow those candidates to become defined by their associations until they can establish their own identities.
On the presidential level, though, the endorsements are much more about the endorser than the candidate.  People already know Hillary Clinton — perhaps too much at this stage.  They don’t need John McCain’s endorsement to unravel the mystery for them.  The same will be true for all of the realistic front-runners for the party nominations in 2016, too.  Endorsements are a way to assign political figures to a team and to raise money, but very few people will back Scott Walker or Mike Pence (to use other potential examples) because a Senator from either party lines up with them.

Asking Questions About Benghazi, One Year Later

WASHINGTON — It has now been just over a year since a group of terrorists overwhelmed our diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, and killed four Americans, one of whom was our Ambassador, two of whom were former SEALs. Today we know little more than we did then, despite the bluster of the then Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and of President Barack Obama, who has gone on to still other problems. Incidentally, Secretary of State Clinton is now in retirement and ceaselessly roaming the country lecturing for enormous honoraria. She is, according to the press, the “inevitable” Democratic nominee, and, according to the likes of Time magazine’s Joe Klein, the most talented and credentialed candidate for the presidency in “many a moon.”

Muslims in the area are demanding Christians pay them "jizya," a kind of tax that Islamic law requires religious minorities to pay Muslims.
However, the tax is so high many Christians simply can't afford it.
The Voice of the Martyrs reports that a Muslim man demanded a Christian in a village in Assiut pay him nearly $1,500.
The Christian sought help from local police but to no avail.
When he failed to come up with the money, several Muslims went to his home and shot him and his cousin to death.

Rigid frame.

Good power output.
No knock required on arrows.
Longer draw than a standard bow.
Accurate.
So very! light.
Simple to build.
Cheap - cost £2.50 for proper catapult rubber preferred by the Chinese apparently (big following of catapults).
Pimp this up and she would be awesome - I kinda like her dirty and visceral though.
Easily shoot 20 meters.
Would work well for short range hunting of small game or fish.
