Sean Linnane  (h/t whuptdue) “We were at OP Mest, Paktika Province, Afghanistan. It was a small outpost where B Co 1-501st INF (Airbone) ran operations out of, just an Infantry platoon and ANA counterparts there.

The place was an Afghan graveyard. Bergdahl had been acting a little strange, telling people he wanted to “walk the earth” and kept a little journal talking about how he was meant for better things. No one thought anything about it. He was a little “out there”.

Next morning he’s gone. We search everywhere, and can’t find him. He left his weapon, his kit, and other sensitive items. He only took some water, a compass and a knife. We find some afghan kids shortly after who saw an american walking north asking about where the taliban are.

We get hits on our voice intercepter that Taliban has him, and we were close. We come to realize that the kid deserted his post, snuck out of camp and sought out Taliban… to join them. We were in a defensive position at OP Mest, where your focus is to keep people out. He knew where the blind spots were to slip out and that’s what he did.

It was supposed to be a 4-day mission but turned into several months of active searching. Everyone was spun up to find this guy.

News outlets all over the country were putting out false information. It was hard to see, especially when we knew the truth about what happened and we lost good men trying to find him.

PFC Matthew Michael Martinek, Staff Sgt. Kurt Robert Curtiss, SSG Clayton Bowen, PFC Morris Walker, SSG Michael Murphrey, 2LT Darryn Andrews, were all KIA from our unit who died looking for Bergdahl. Many others from various units were wounded or killed while actively looking for Bergdahl.

Fighting Increased. IEDs and enemy ambushes increased. The Taliban knew that we were looking for him in high numbers and our movements were predictable. Because of Bergdahl, more men were out in danger, and more attacks on friendly camps and positions were conducted while we were out looking for him. His actions impacted the region more than anyone wants to admit.

There is also no way to know what he told the Taliban: Our movements, locations, tactics, weak points on vehicles and other things for the enemy to exploit are just a few possibilities. The Government knows full well that he deserted. It looks bad and is a good propaganda piece for the Taliban.

They refuse to acknowledge it. Hell they even promoted him to Sergeant which makes me sick. I feel for his family who only want their son/brother back. They don’t know the truth, or refuse to acknowledge it as well. What he did affected his family and his whole town back home, who don’t know the truth.

Either way what matters is that good men died because of him. He has been lying on all those Taliban videos about everything since his “capture”. If he ever returns, he should be tried under the UCMJ for being a deserter and judged for what he did. Bergdahl is not a hero, he is not a soldier or an Infantryman. He failed his brothers. Now, sons and daughters are growing up without their fathers who died for him and he will have to face that truth someday.”

Stockman resolution sanctions Mexico over U.S. Marine’s arrest

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Steve Stockman will introduce a resolution demanding President Barack Obama impose “harsh sanctions” on the Mexican government until they release U.S. Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi. 

“Mexico’s arrest and detention of Sgt. Tahmooressi is an unnecessary and inflammatory act.  It’s becoming clear the only way to bring Sgt. Tahmooressi home is for the U.S. government to threaten harsh sanctions,” said Stockman.

Sgt. Tahmooressi has been held in a Mexican prison on charges of violating Mexican gun laws since March 31. Sgt. Tahmooressi unintentionally took a wrong turn while driving in the United States near the Mexican border and accidentally entered the country with three firearms, legal in Texas but illegal in Mexico.

The text of the resolution follows:

A resolution expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the Government of Mexico should forthwith repatriate Sgt. Andrew Paul Tahmooressi from Mexican prison(s) and expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the President of the United States should take actions to impose sanctions on Mexico until such time as Sgt. Tahmooressi is released. 

Whereas Sgt. Tahmooressi served with the U.S. Marine Corps for two tours of duty in Afghanistan earning a rare combat field promotion to Sergeant;

Whereas Sgt. Tahmooressi was driving near the U.S.-Mexican border on March 31, 2014 when he took a wrong turn and unintentionally drove into Mexico.  He was stopped by police in Mexico and arrested for possessing three firearms which were fully legal in Texas and were registered to him; 

Whereas, Sgt. Tahmooressi has a distinguished record in the U.S. Marine Corps and there is no indication that Sgt. Tahmooressi was in violation of other laws in Mexico, except possession of his own firearms;

Now, therefore, be it resolved that it is the sense of the House of Representatives that

(1.)       the Government of Mexico should expeditiously release and repatriate Sgt. Tahmooressi and all possessions that have been seized;  and

(2.)       the President of the United States should communicate with the Government of Mexico that he will impose increasingly harsh sanctions on Mexico until such time as Sgt. Tahmooressi is released.

Salmon Visits U.S. Marine Sgt. Tahmooressi in Mexico

Tijuana, Mexico—Today, Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05) released the following statement after visiting U.S. Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi at el Hongo II prison in Tijuana, Mexico.

"Today, I had the opportunity sit down with Sgt. Tahmooressi and discuss his treatment by prison personnel and his legal case going forward.  While I’m deeply offended by some of the treatment he received at the hands of prison officials at his previous detainment facility, I’m pleased to report he is doing well and is in good spirits since being relocated to el Hongo II. I also had the opportunity to tour this facility, and I leave confident that he will be treated respectfully.  I also expressed to both prison officials and U.S. consular personnel that his care going forward is of the utmost importance and that our expectations are that when Andrew comes home, he will be in good physical condition. 

“In addition, Sgt. Tahmooressi and I were able to hold a private discussion regarding his case and strategy for his upcoming hearing.  He seems comfortable with his new attorney and is hopeful that he will have a successful hearing where his story will be fully explained.

“I understand the wheels of justice can be slow, but I remain frustrated that this case, which amounts to a U.S. Marine making a wrong turn, has taken so long to resolve.  Andrew has served our country honorably and was in San Diego to receive the scheduled PTSD treatment he desperately needs. It is imperative that we get him home so he can recover.  He is a U.S. Marine, he is ours, and he needs to be home.”

House Report: "Choke Point" Targets Legal (Firearms) Businesses for Closure

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa  (R-Calif.)  released a staff report, The Department of Justice's "Operation Choke Point": Illegally Choking Off Legitimate Businesses?  (H/T Landis)

The report concludes that the true goal of the operation is to "choke out" certain industries, including legal businesses like sellers of firearms and ammunition, which the current administration considers politically objectionable. 

The report follows the Department of Justice's (DOJ's) launch last year of Operation Choke Point, a wide-ranging investigation into banks and payment processors (the middlemen between banks and merchants in financial transactions).

DOJ claimed the operation was aimed at combating mass-market consumer fraud by shutting down access to the banking and payment systems that are necessary for fraudulent businesses to operate. The justification was an alleged higher "risk profile" for consumer fraud or potentially illegal activities associated with some merchants or activities

identified by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). 

These "high risk" merchants are typically characterized by high rates of unauthorized transactions, consumer complaints, or evidence of state or federal regulatory or criminal actions against the business customer. However, with no explanation or justification, the FDIC's list of high-risk merchants and activities also lumped in ammunition and firearm sales (among other legal industries) with potentially exploitative or outright illegal enterprises. No one can reasonably suggest that firearms and ammunition sellers pose the same risks of fraud to banks and consumers as Ponzi schemes, cable-box descramblers, "get rich" products, online gambling, pyramid–type sales, debt consolidation scams, and similar schemes.

As NRA recently reported, evidence has been mounting that banks and financial institutions have been responding to the threat or potential for government investigative action and penalties by refusing to do business with legitimate law-abiding companies in the firearm industry. These decisions, moreover, are apparently being made without regard to the specific company's credit, criminal or financial history. Rather, they're predicated on the implicit threat that a bank's business relationship with a listed "high risk" merchant could be enough to trigger a federal subpoena and resulting investigation and lawsuit. 

Earlier this year, Chairman Issa and Subcommittee Chairman Jim Jordan requested that the Justice Department produce documents and communications related to Choke Point. Their resulting review of the 853 pages of internal documents provided in response concludes that "Operation Choke Point is an inappropriate exercise of the Department's legal authorities, and is being executed in a manner that unfairly harms legitimate merchants and individuals."

Other key findings of the report released this week include the following:

• DOJ acted without the requisite legal basis. In furtherance of Operation Choke Point, the Department of Justice "radically and inappropriately expanded its own authority." Operation Choke Point's investigatory basis purportedly rests on subpoenas issued under Section 951 of the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act of 1989, or FIRREA. Yet this authority was intended to give the Department the tools to pursue civil penalties against entities that commit fraud affecting banks, not to investigate consumer fraud, much less private companies doing legal business.
• Despite assertions that the government's intended goal was limited to fraudulent activity, the report finds that DOJ targeted legitimate businesses. The desired effect was clearly to have legal merchants and legitimate businesses "choked off from the financial system." Operation Choke Point, according to the report, effectively transformed the FDIC "high risk" list "into an implicit threat of a federal investigation," a reaction the DOJ anticipated. The Justice Department was aware of the impact on legitimate businesses – that banks were dumping entire sectors of business deemed "high risk" by the government -- and "dismissed them."  The proffered reasoning was that banks and "legitimate" businesses would sort it out, an expectation the report likened to claiming, "if one is not a witch, then they will sink rather than float."
     
• Rather than have offenders prosecuted on the basis of real and sufficient evidence in a court of law, DOJ misused its authority to "forcibly conscript banks to serve as the 'policemen and judges' of the commercial world."
• The report specifically cites the consequences of labeling firearms and ammunition sales as "high risk," resulting in law-abiding firearm merchants having existing bank accounts frozen or terminated. "The experience of firearms and ammunition merchants – an industry far removed from consumer finance fraud – calls into question the sincerity of the Department's statements" regarding the scope and goals of  Operation Choke Point.

Scores of illegals immigrants dropped off in Arizona

Scores of undocumented immigrants from Central America have been released at Greyhound Lines Inc. bus stations in Tucson and Phoenix over the past several days after they were flown to Arizona from south Texas, officials acknowledged.

Andy Adame, a spokesman for the Border Patrol in Tucson, confirmed that over the weekend federal officials flew about 400 migrants apprehended in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas to Tucson to be processed. He said the migrants were flown to Arizona because the Border Patrol does not have enough manpower to handle a surge in illegal immigrants in south Texas.

The release has drawn criticism from those on both sides of the immigration issue.

Border enforcement groups are concerned that the migrants will now disappear into the U.S., spurring even more to come illegally.

The release of five Taliban prisoners in exchange for a U.S. soldier has drawn criticism from some Afghans, who say the detainees are dangerous and will rekindle ties with terrorist networks to resume fighting, just as most foreign troops leave.

The men had been held at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba since 2002 and were classed by the Pentagon as “high-risk” and “likely to pose a threat”.

Two are also implicated in the murder of thousands of minority Shi’ite Muslims in Afghanistan, according to the U.S. military.

They were released in a swap with U.S. army sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, the sole American prisoner of war held in Afghanistan who was flown to a U.S. military hospital in Germany on Sunday.

“They will definitely go back to fight, if health-wise they are able to go,” said a top official at Afghanistan’s spy agency, who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the topic.

“They will be very dangerous people, because they have connections with regional and international terror organizations around the world.”

Obamanomics Update: 200 workers lose jobs unexpectedly in Lancaster County

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. —Close to 200 people in Lancaster County are losing their jobs at Source InterLink.

The group is a magazine distribution company with a location at the Greenfield Corporate Center.

Workers were initially told that the company would be slowly shutting down over the next two or three months. However, when they arrived at work on Friday, they were told the shutdown had been enacted and to go home.

The company has about 85 full time workers, and about 100 temporary workers.

In a letter, the company's CEO wrote that one of their major suppliers decided to move in a different direction. Without that supplier, the company could not continue.

About 6,000 jobs will be cut nationwide, according to the New York Post.

News 8 has left repeated messages to the company that have gone unanswered. At least one long-time employee says all of her questions have gone unanswered as well.

The Department of Labor and Industry says it has not received notification of the closure, but will reach out with a rapid response team.

On Saturday morning the Obama administration happily announced that we were now negotiating with terrorists and that Bowe Bergdahl would be freed in an agreement with the Taliban that would allow five dangerous terrorists to be released from Guantanamo Bay. Bowe’s father Bob Bergdahl appeared with Obama for the announcement:
