A protester angry about food giant Generals Mills’ taking a stand against a proposed state constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage accidentally set fire to the lawn at the company’s headquarters after torching a bowl of Cheerios.
“One in every eight boxes of cereal in this country is Cheerios,” the man says in a video posted to YouTube.
“This is really the treat for . . . homosexuals,” he adds, box of Cheerios in one hand, and a hand torch in the other.
The protest came after a prominent anti-gay marriage organization called for a boycott against the Minnesota company for its stance on the issue.
“We do not believe the proposed constitutional amendment is in the best interests of our employees or our state economy,” General Mills vice president for global diversity and inclusion Ken Charles wrote in a web letter declaring the company against a proposed gay-marriage ban.
“We value diversity. We value inclusion.”
The National Organization of Marriage has called for a boycott of General Mills’ products which include such tasty delights as Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Wheaties cereals, Häagen-Dazs ice cream and Pillsbury dough.
While fast-food chain Chick-fil-A has garnered the headlines for the anti-gay marriage stance of its owners, a number of major corporations have quietly supported gay rights, including Kraft, Starbucks, Nike, Microsoft and Amazon.
