Penn Manor Superintendent Michael Leichliter wants to bring mental health issues out of the shadows and beyond the boundaries of the home.
"Schools need to pay attention to it, too," he said.
This fall, Penn Manor School District will pilot the TeenHope program, a partnership with Lancaster's Samaritan Counseling Center that will screen ninth-grade students for depression and suicidal tendencies.
Leichliter said he believes that after the Sandy Hook school massacre the national discussion should have focused more on an "increased awareness of mental health."
