Parents Of Teen Strip-Searched At School Sue Assistant Principal, Police
Dec. 8, 2012
CHICAGO (CBS) – The parents of a 15-year old boy who was allegedly strip-searched at a high school last month have filed a lawsuit against the Chicago Public Schools.
In an exclusive interview with CBS 2 Investigator Pam Zekman, the boy and his outraged parents described what happened.
“He came home crying. So I asked him why he was crying,” said the boy’s father, Anthony Woodman. “And he was like hysterical. He tells me he’s been strip-searched.”
It allegedly happened at Taft High school last month.
His mother, Michelle Woodman said she contacted the CBS2 Investigators “so this doesn’t happen to anyone else. No one should go through what our son went through.”
The student said two security guards, a Chicago police officer and a female assistant principal took him from an room where he was serving an “in school suspension” to a nearby washroom on the second floor.
Asked if the officer or assistant principal said anything, the student said, “They told me they had an anonymous tip. They were looking for drugs.”
He said, while the others watched, one of the security guards put him up against the wall of a bathroom stall so his back was to the guards.
“And then he searched me with my clothes on,” the boy said. “Then he told me to remove my belt. As I undid my belt he pulled my pants and underwear down to my knees.”
After that, “He started grabbing and searching my privates,” the boy said.
He said they did not find any drugs.
Records the Woodmans provided said CPS staff diagnosed their son with an emotional disorder and learning disability. He requires special education services.
Misconduct reports detail behavioral problems leading to numerous suspensions, some contested by his parents.
As for the strip search, his father said “there needs to be consequences for what they did to him.”
Now his parents are suing everyone allegedly involved, and Chicago Public Schools and City of Chicago.
“What we are claiming is that his civil rights were violated when he was strip searched without cause and unreasonably,” said Julie Herrera, the Woodman’s attorney.
“The way it was done was outrageous,” Herrera said. “Having a 15-year-old boy have to have a woman – an older woman – watch him with his pants down, while he is touched by another man. I think is horribly humiliating and embarrassing.”
His mother said it was humiliating for her son, and it has adversely affected him.
“He is very withdrawn. He sleeps with his clothes on. He’s had nightmares,” said Michelle Woodman. “He is very angry. He’s depressed. He is just not the same person.”
The assistant principal who allegedly watched the strip search declined to comment, referring questions to the Chicago Public School’s law department.
A CPS spokeswoman said their policy is that “under no circumstances are strip searches of students allowed on CPS premises.”
The CPS policy manual also prohibits “washroom searches.”
Spokeswomen for both CPS and the Chicago Police Department said they cannot comment on this case until their investigation is complete.

Former NAACP Chapter President: No Reason For Blacks To Vote For Obama Except Race
Dec. 8, 2012
By Noel Sheppard
Newsbusters.org:
C.L. Bryant, a former NAACP Texas president and current Baptist minister, told MSNBC's Thomas Roberts Thursday there's really no reason for black people to have voted for the re-election of Barack Obama other than the color of his skin.
Bryant said that due to the high Latino unemployment rate as well as the high poverty rate among young white women, the same was true for those demographic groups.
THOMAS ROBERTS, HOST: Reverend, how can the Republican Party do better with nontraditional constituencies?
REVEREND C.L. BRYANT: By telling the truth about who they've been historically. That has been distorted. The truth of the matter is this - and Mr. Reed did in fact say well, the president did well through the south - but the truth of the matter is this: take away this president's skin color and take away the race card that is played so often with this president and there's really no reason for black people to vote for him or Latinos in that frame as well, because when you look at the unemployment rate among those two demographics, when you look at the poverty rate among young white females, there is no reason for anybody to have re-elected this president in those demographics except for the emotional issue of race. And this is what I’m saying, and this is what we say in our movie “Runaway Slave.”
The Democrat party, the progressive liberals, have been very successful in co-opting the emotional issues of the day. The truth of the matter is those very issues have led the same group of people who voted this president and voted for him religiously into a mindset and to a culture of bondage.
Shocking stuff, especially for MSNBC.

It Begins… Obama’s Ministry Of Truth Replacing Great Literature With Propaganda In The Classroom
Dec. 8, 2012
Posted by Andrea Ryan
The Gateway Pundit:
The Obama Administration has launched its newest campaign to confiscate the minds of our children. To qualify for federal grant funds, Obama is requiring states to adopt a new program called Common Core State Standards In English. The program would wipe great works of literature from English curriculums across the country. And replace them with “information text”, such as “Executive Order 13423: Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management”, an Order, of course, favorable to the Liberal environmentalist movement.
Via Lucianne, Powerline reports,
Controversy is brewing over new Common Core State Standards in English that call on public schools to emphasize the reading of “information text” instead of fictional literature. According to the Washington Post, English teachers across the country are upset by what they consider the government’s effort “to drive literature out of the classroom.”
English teachers are right to be upset, but they shouldn’t take it personally. The government has nothing much against literature, per se. Rather, this initiative is driven in large part by the desire to promote political propaganda in the classroom. The study of literature is being downgraded in the process, but for a good cause.
Consider that one of the “informational texts” recommended as a replacement for, say, Great Expectations is “Executive Order 13423: Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management.” Students would thus study government propaganda in English class (this Executive Order was issued under President Bush, but it is still propaganda — a political sop to the environmental left, as Stanley Kurtz shows).
Another Common Core’s non-fiction exemplar is an excerpt from a 2009 New Yorker essay by Atul Gawande on health care. This too is propaganda – an effort to show that Obamacare is wise policy.
Proponents of downgrading the teaching of literature claim that their goal is to make sure U.S. students can read and understand complicated texts. But there are plenty of complicated texts that don’t amount to political propaganda, much less propaganda relating to current hot-button policy issues in which the Obama administration is heavily invested. If teaching students how to read such texts were the only goal here, the list of exemplar tests wouldn’t include one-sided political tracts about health care and the environment.
Consider also where the Common Core comes from? The Washington Post tries to make it appear that the new curriculum percolated up from the states. But at the back end of its story we find that “the Obama administration kicked the notion into high gear when it required states to adopt the common standards — or an equivalent — in order to compete for Race to the Top grant funds.” (emphasis added).
The Common Core, then, should be viewed, at least in part, as an attempt by the Obama administration to gain control of what is taught in public schools for the purpose of indoctrination. As Stanley Kurtz puts it, “Obama has managed to press direct support for his most cherished and controversial policy initiative onto your local school district.”
I wonder if Obama will be obvious enough to begin his order of mass removal with 1984? This egregious scheme of Obama Think indoctrination on our current and future generations of children has English teachers furious. The rest of the country should be, as well. And states should refuse to participate.

Complaint: Egyptian Rioters Against Obama-Endorsed Dictator Make Obama Look Bad
Dec. 8, 2012
Obama Calls His Egyptian-Appointed Dictator: Complains about Riots, Not Human Rights
(Daily Caller) - President Barack Obama called Egypt’s Islamist president Dec. 6 to complain about televised riots in Cairo that showcase the collapse of Obama’s much-touted 2009 “New Beginning” outreach to Islamist progressive groups.
The president called “to express his deep concern about the deaths and injuries of protesters in Egypt … [and he] emphasized that all political leaders in Egypt should make clear to their supporters that violence is unacceptable,” according to a White House statement.
At least six people have been killed in the riots, which reports say have also injured hundreds more.
The call was made shortly after President Mohammed Morsi went on Egyptian TV to denounce the protesters as agents of unnamed foreigners and Egypt’s deposed autocrats. He vowed to push ahead with a Dec. 15 vote that is expected to ratify a draft constitution based on Islamic political priorities.
“Afterwards, there should be no obstacle, and everyone must follow its will,” Morsi told the nation, according to press reports.
The White House’s Dec. 6 statement said nothing about any use of U.S. sanctions to preserve democracy or civil rights in the country of 72 million, even though Morsi is pushing to create a Islamist theocracy.
“The Obama administration can and should be doing a lot more in public to make clear the red lines in America’s policy towards Egypt,” said Robert Zarate, the policy director at the D.C.-based Foreign Policy Initiative.
“We should be using that aid as a lever, because what we want to see is an Egyptian constitution and an Egyptian government that respects impartial rule of law, that protects the rights of religious minorities and of women … and the competitive spirit of politics,” he told The Daily Caller.
Obama’s call came one day after he met with Morsi’s chief aide, Essam Al-Haddad, in the White House.
The White House statement portrayed Obama as neutral in the struggle between Egypt’s Islamist government and the pro-democracy protesters.
Obama “welcomed President Morsi’s call for a dialogue with the opposition but stressed that such a dialogue should occur without preconditions … [and] also urged opposition leaders to join in this dialogue without preconditions,” the statement said.
That’s a contrast from September, when Obama called Morsi to complain that Cairo police had not protected the U.S. Embassy during a Sept. 11, 2012 riot in Cairo.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police have released video of officers responding after Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend and later himself.
Two dashboard videos were released Friday night, nearly a week after Belcher killed Kasandra Perkins at their home and then drove to the team's stadium and shot himself last Saturday.
The first video shows officers finding Belcher asleep in his parked car around 3 a.m. that day outside an apartment complex. Police say he told officers he was there to visit a woman who wasn't home. A woman eventually let Belcher into the building.
The second video was recorded as a patrol car responds five hours later to Arrowhead Stadium. Police radio catches officers confirming that there's been a shooting connected to Belcher, and later that he's armed at the stadium.

New York Times Admits Reaganomics Worked
Dec. 7, 2012
Whoops!!
(Big Journalism) - After 30 years, The New York Times has admitted that Reaganomics worked.
The inadvertent revelation comes in a November 29th article by Binyamin Appelbaum chronicling the steadily falling tax burden Americans have experienced since the 1980s.
AEI columnist James Pethokoukis notes that the heart of The Times' article is that in 2010 Americans "paid far less in total taxes -- federal, state and local -- than they would have paid 30 years ago."
Pethokoukis points out that some tax hike advocates think this means that America's tax burden is too low and time has come for a hike. But Pethokoukis disagrees.
Maybe I’m crazy, but I think the reduction in the tax burden — staring with the Reagan tax cuts — has been a huge competitive advantage for the U.S. We should keep that edge. Check out these numbers. In 1981, France’s per capita GDP was 81% of U.S. per capita GDP, Germany’s 83%, Italy’s 81%, Britain’s 69%.
In 2010, France’s per capita GDP was 73% of U.S. per capita GDP (down 8 points), Germany’s 81% (down 2 points), Italy’s 68% (down 12 points), and Britain’s 76% (up 7 points).
Pethokoukis reminds readers that Europe was closing the gap with U.S. wealth by 1980, but after Reagan's tax cuts that trend stagnated and in other cases even began to reverse.
There are many great points made in the Pethokoukis piece and you need to go read them, but his last one is the funniest—or saddest, depending on your point of view.
4. Another bit: “Economists agree that taxes on business are passed on to investors, reducing profits, and to workers, reducing wages. Upper-income households bear the brunt of these taxes, and corporate tax collections have fallen sharply.” That is right. Taxes matter.
Funny, the NYT never mentioned this widely known economic fact when Mitt Romney was attacked for saying “Corporations are people.”
It seems there are a lot of things the Gray Lady never mentions.

Obama Comes Out Against Right-To-Work Legislation
Dec. 7, 2012
HufPo:
WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration, in a statement Thursday afternoon, came out against proposed "right-to-work" legislation being pushed by Republicans in Michigan including Gov. Rick Snyder (R).
"President Obama has long opposed so-called ‘right to work’ laws and he continues to oppose them now," said White House spokesperson Matt Lehrich. "The President believes our economy is stronger when workers get good wages and good benefits, and he opposes attempts to roll back their rights. Michigan – and its workers' role in the revival of the US automobile industry – is a prime example of how unions have helped build a strong middle class and a strong American economy."
This isn't the first time the president has had to weigh into the state politics surrounding collective bargaining and labor law. He also spoke out against efforts by Gov. Scott Walker (R) to take away collective bargaining rights in Wisconsin.
Still, the statement is a welcome sign for labor activists, who are trying to turn national attention on to what's happening in Michigan, as the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday:
Michigan's governor and top legislative leaders declared their joint support on Thursday for right-to-work legislation that would ban contracts requiring all employees to pay union dues.
Bills are expected to be introduced Thursday in the Michigan Senate and House with supporters predicting swift passage in a lame-duck legislative session by the end of the year. The GOP has a majority in both chambers.
Hundreds of opponents gathered at the state Capitol in Lansing in protest. It was expected to be the beginning of a fierce fight between labor and business interests over the future of union rights in the birthplace of the powerful United Auto Workers union.

Did You Hear Gen. Boykin’s Warnings about Obamunism? Pass it on?
Dec. 7, 2012
By Arlen Williams
This was going around, about two years ago. Now, Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. is due to take his Oath of Office (whatever good it does for him to swear to uphold the Constitution) again, this coming January, for ostensibly another four year curse upon the United States of America.
How many more people need to hear and see?
And would it do enough good, or are their eyes and ears blocked with lies?
From MorningStarTV.com:
We have documented such evidence here at Gulag Bound. That is why we are here. How can we get this information out to others who have not seen?
The answer: we will have to generate one-page printouts for you and others to take door-to-door and instructions.

Students in West Virginia School forced to stand for Black National Anthem by Principal
Dec. 7, 2012
What, I bet you thought we were "One Nation Under God"?
(NewsNinja2012.com) - Students at Capital High School (CHS) in Charleston, West Virginia have been regularly forced to stand during the playing of a song known as “The Black National Anthem.”
The song, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” was played in the morning right after the American national anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance, and students were forced to stand for all three. While the law currently states that no child can be compelled to stand for any kind of pledge, controversy only arose at CHS after two students and a parent complained about having to stand for the “Black National Anthem” (BNA).

Netflix faces US penalty for CEO Facebook comments
Dec. 7, 2012
Free Speech Attack 101:
AFP - Online video giant Netflix said Thursday it faces a possible penalty from US regulators for comments made by its top executive on his Facebook account about subscriber activity.
The company made the disclosure in a regulatory filing as well as in another Facebook posting by CEO Reed Hastings.
The company said it received a "Wells Notice" from the SEC which means that some enforcement action is likely to be taken.
The civil action is possible because of Facebook postings by Hastings, which stated that its customers were spending around a billion hours per month watching Netflix.
Under SEC rules, any information important to shareholders should be disclosed publicly in a regulatory filing known as an 8K form.
"SEC staff informed us yesterday that they are recommending that the SEC bring a civil action against us for my July, one billion hour public post, asserting we violated 'Reg FD,'" the CEO said.
"This rule is designed to ensure that individual investors have equal access to information as large institutional investors, by prohibiting selective disclosure of material information."
Nonetheless, Hastings called this a "fascinating social media story" and defended his actions.
"We think posting to over 200,000 people is very public, especially because many of my subscribers are reporters and bloggers," he said on Facebook.
"We don't currently use Facebook and other social media to get material information to investors; we usually get that information out in our extensive investor letters, press releases and SEC filings. We think the fact of one billion hours of viewing in June was not 'material' to investors."
Hastings said he was "optimistic this can be cleared up quickly through the SEC's review process."

Egypt demonstrators reject Mursi call for dialogue
Dec. 7, 2012
(Reuters) - Demonstrators rejected a call from Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Mursi for a national dialogue after deadly clashes around his palace, demanding the "downfall of the regime" - the chant that brought down Hosni Mubarak.
Mursi said in a televised speech late on Thursday that plans were on track for a referendum on a new constitution on December 15 despite clashes that killed seven people. He proposed a meeting on Saturday with political leaders, "revolutionary youth" and legal figures to discuss the way forward after that.
But a leading activist group rejected the offer, and fresh demonstrations were called for Friday.
The "April 6" movement, which played a prominent role in igniting the revolt against Mubarak said on its Facebook page that Friday's protests would deliver a "red card" to Mursi.
Egypt has been plunged into turmoil since Mursi issued a decree on November 22 awarding himself wide powers and shielding his decisions from judicial review.
His Islamist supporters say the decree was necessary to prevent Mubarak-era judges from interfering with reforms. A constitution drawn up by a body dominated by Islamists is due to be put to a referendum next week.
The opposition has demanded that Mursi scrap his decree, postpone the referendum and redraft the constitution.
In his address, Mursi said: "I call for a full, productive dialogue with all figures and heads of parties, revolutionary youth and senior legal figures to meet this Saturday."
Several thousand opposition protesters near the palace waved their shoes in derision after his speech and shouted "Killer, killer" and "We won't go, he will go" - another of the slogans used against Mubarak in last year's revolt.
The Cairo headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood, the group that propelled Mursi to victory in a June election, was set ablaze. Other offices of its political party were attacked.
TENTATIVE CONCESSION
The United States, worried about the stability of an Arab partner which has a peace deal with Israel and which receives $1.3 billion a year in U.S. military aid, had urged dialogue.
Mursi said his entire decree would lapse after the constitutional referendum, regardless of its result.
He said a new constituent assembly would be formed to redraft the constitution if Egyptians rejected the one written in the past six months.
The Republican Guard, an elite unit whose duties include protecting the presidential palace, restored peace on Thursday after a night of violence outside the palace, ordering rival demonstrators to leave by mid-afternoon.
Mursi supporters withdrew, but opposition protesters remained, kept away by a barbed wire barricade guarded by tanks. By evening their numbers had swelled to several thousand.
Thousands of supporters and opponents of Mursi had fought well into Thursday's early hours, using rocks, petrol bombs and guns. Officials said 350 were wounded in the violence. Six of the dead were Mursi supporters, the Muslim Brotherhood said.
Opposition groups have called for protests after Friday prayers aimed at "the downfall of the militia regime", a dig at what they see as the Brotherhood's organized street muscle.
A communique from a leftist group urged protesters to gather at mosques and squares across Egypt, and to stage marches in Cairo and its sister city Giza, converging on the presidential palace. "Egyptian blood is a red line," the communique said.
Hardline Islamist Salafis also summoned their supporters to protest against what they consider biased coverage of the crisis by some private Egyptian satellite television channels.
Since Mursi issued his decree, six of his advisers have resigned. Essam al-Amir, the director of state television, quit on Thursday, as did a Christian official at the presidency.
The Brotherhood's supreme guide, Mohamed Badie, called for unity, saying divisions "only serve the nation's enemies".
The Islamists, who have won presidential and parliamentary elections since Mubarak was overthrown, are confident they can win the referendum and the parliamentary election to follow.
As well as relying on his Brotherhood power base, Mursi may also tap into a popular yearning for stability and economic revival after almost two years of political turmoil.
Egypt's pound hit an eight-year low on Thursday, reversing gains made on hopes that a $4.8 billion IMF loan would stabilize the economy. The stock market fell 4.6 percent.

Conservative Actor Stephen Baldwin arrested for alleged tax evasion
NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Actor Stephen Baldwin was arrested Thursday in New York for alleged failure to file personal income tax returns from 2008-10, prosecutors said.
The Rockland County District Attorney's office told TMZ the "Usual Suspects" star owes more than $350,000 in back taxes.
"At a time when Rockland County and New York State face severe fiscal shortfalls, we cannot afford to allow wealthy residents to break the law by cheating on their taxes," the district attorney's office said in a statement. "The defendant's repetitive failure to file returns and pay taxes over a period of several years contributes to the sweeping cutbacks and closures in local government and in our schools."
Baldwin faces a possible four years in prison if convicted.
The actor is the younger brother of "30 Rock" star Alec Baldwin.

Internet users help expose corruption
Dec. 7, 2012
BEIJING, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Internet users in China, where censorship is tough, have won praise for helping expose official corruption, a rampant problem in the country, officials said.
The official Xinhua News Agency reported Thursday a number of Chinese officials have been dismissed because of corruption or misconduct after official investigations resulting from initial exposure by Internet users.
Chinese netizens, or Internet users, are embracing "online anti-corruption" as part of an endeavor to fight wrongdoing, the report said.
Xinhua cited the case of the mayor of a northwestern capital city, who was exposed by a netizen after allegedly being seen at various public events wearing expensive wrist watches, with the price of the most costly piece estimated at $31,746, the report said.
In another case in October, an urban management official in a province was fired by authorities who were tipped off by online postings showing he owned 22 houses, the report said.
In a lurid case, Xinhua said, a district head in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality was sacked after his sex video with a female was leaked on the Internet.
The new leadership in the country has warned corruption and misconduct, if not checked, could lead to the collapse of the Communist Party and the state.
The report quoted experts as saying China's fight against corruption, aided by netizens demanding justice, needs legal and institutional guarantees.
At the same time, the experts said the "online anti-corruption" campaign has its limits and sometimes can do harm to innocent people, such as in the case of a woman shown in an Internet posting as owning 24 houses. The report said investigation later showed she owned the houses with her son through hard work and investment.
Zhang Youde, head of social management at Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, told Xinhua Internet muckrakers should take legal responsibility if they violate the privacy of others.
Censorship in China affecting print, broadcast and online reports has been widely criticized. Chinese authorities are finding their online censoring task increasingly tougher because the number of users has jumped dramatically, to an estimated half-billion.

Zimmerman sues NBC over 911 tape editing
SANFORD, Fla., Dec. 7 (UPI) -- George Zimmerman, charged in Florida with shooting an unarmed black teenager, sued NBC Thursday, charging an edited 911 tape defamed him.
In a complaint filed in Seminole County in Florida, Zimmerman said the network edited the tape to make him appear racist, CNN reported. Two former reporters were also named as defendants.
"NBC saw the death of Trayvon Martin not as a tragedy but as an opportunity to increase ratings, and so set about to create the myth that George Zimmerman was a racist and predatory villain," the complaint says.
Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., says he shot Martin, 17, in self-defense after the teenager assaulted him. He called 911 after spotting Martin, who was walking to a relative's house, and ignored a suggestion from a dispatcher that he should back off.
In the lawsuit, he says NBC engaged in "deceptive and exploitative manipulations."

Treasury Secretary Geithner: Obama administration 'absolutely' ready to go over cliff if top earners don't face higher tax rates
Dec. 6, 2012
ENJOY YOUR TRIP! Many of us are already here, waiting...
AP) — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Wednesday that the Obama administration is "absolutely" ready for the U.S. economy to go over the "fiscal cliff" rather than accept a budget deal that doesn't include higher tax rates for top earners.
Geithner said the administration thinks budget deficits are so large that they can't be closed without boosting tax rates on the highest-earning 2 percent of Americans. Most Republicans oppose higher rates for any taxpayers.
"There's no prospect in an agreement that doesn't involve those rates going up on the top 2 percent of the wealthiest Americans," Geithner said in an interview on CNBC.
Geithner's comments immediately drew fire from a top Republican senator.
"This is one of the most stunning and irresponsible statements I've heard in some time," said Sen. Orrin Hatch. "Going over the fiscal cliff will put our economy, jobs, people's paychecks and retirement at risk, but that is what the White House wants, according to Secretary Geithner, if they don't get their way."
The fiscal cliff refers to the tax increases and deep spending cuts that will take effect in January unless Congress and the White House reach a budget deal first.
In the interview, Geithner also said the administration would reject a budget plan that didn't include an increase in the federal borrowing limit. The current limit is expected to be reached either late this month or early next year.
"We are not prepared to have the American economy held hostage to periodic threats that Republicans will force the country to default on our obligations," Geithner said. "That would be a terrible thing for the financial security of the average American, for businesses, for confidence around the world and the United States."
Geithner said he still thinks progress is being made in the budget negotiations and that the outlines of an agreement are becoming clearer.
"They look inevitable," he said.

Sometime after 5pm he was rushed to Hawkesbury Hospital, where he died. Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione is believed to be heading to the scene.
Two people have been arrested, according to media reports.
Police had been responding to a dispute between two neighbours, one of whom could have been carrying a bow and arrow, the Seven Network reported. It is 252nd death of police officer on duty in NSW.
A male suspect in his 20s has been arrested, the Seven Network reported. Other media reports indicate two men had been taken into custody and were being questioned by police.
Media footage has shown a shirtless man being handcuffed as he lay on the ground.
The fatally injured officer, a senior detective aged 45, was described to Fairfax Media as "very experienced".
The Nine Network has reported that the officer was well known and very popular in the local area.

Wounded Warrior Project In Not So Many Words Admits It Is Anti Gun
Dec. 6, 2012
Shooting Wire Editor’s Note: Over the past week, we’ve followed the discussion and controversy surrounding the Wounded Warrior Project following their taking a pass to appear on Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk. Today, Tom Gresham brings us his complete take on the WWP controversy.
MANDEVILLE, LA --(Ammoland.com)- Does the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) have a bias against guns and gun makers?
Two weeks ago that would have sounded crazy, but this week many shooters are convinced that it’s true. Hundreds of hunts and shoots are held as fundraisers for the WWP, and gun companies donate to WWP for its projects. How could it be that this $185 million (2013 projected revenue) outfit could be anti-gun?
It started with a simple invitation — I wanted someone from the Wounded Warrior Project to join me for the Veteran’s Day episode of my national radio show, Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk. I had no idea it would turn into a national dustup which now has the gun rights community in a turmoil — so much so that people are burning their Wounded Warrior Project shirts.
We were disappointed when the Leslie Coleman, PR director for WWP, said they couldn’t come on the show, but that happens. Schedules don’t mesh, things happen, but that’s not uncommon. No big deal. Except that Ms. Coleman said they were declining because we “are related to firearms.”
“While we appreciate the interest in having a WWP representative on your show on Veterans Day we are not able to participate in interviews or activities with media/organizations that are related to firearms,” said Ms. Coleman in her email.
That really rocked us because we knew of all the firearms-related activities used to raise money for WWP. I asked for clarification, and Coleman reconfirmed their position. That Sunday I talked about it on the air and sent out a tweet (@guntalk) with the information. Some doubted that I had reported it correctly, so we posted the entire email exchange on our Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/notes/gun-talk/wounded-warrior-project-email-exchange/10151354082553313
That lit the fuse, and hundreds (if not thousands) of gun rights supporters contacted WWP for clarification. The response was . . . a bit bland. Mostly it was along the lines of “We support the Second Amendment . . .,” but the WWP web site specifically called out the firearms industry as one it would not “co-brand” with. That is, it would not allow the use of its logo on guns (and it turns out, on knives, either.)
The other industries it won’t co-brand with? Alcohol and sex.
Coleman’s explanation that guns are used in suicides, and suicide is a big issue for returning vets, set off a firestorm of response. WWP quietly started making changes to its web site, removing mention of firearms, or changing it to “weapons.” Online firearms boards documented the changes, posting the before and after. The pressure mounted on WWP.
By midweek, with the help of the Professional Outdoor Media Association, WWP offered to put its CEO, Steve Nardizzi, on Gun Talk Radio to explain what they now called a big misunderstanding that had been blown out of proportion. I welcomed the chance to clear up this mess, which no one wanted. I hoped that Nardizzi would announce a change in the policy.
He didn’t. Once on the air, he said they support the Second Amendment (which really did remind me of when President Obama starts a sentence that way), and that they participate in hunts and shoots as fund raisers. Yes, we knew that. But what of the policy blocking the use of the WWP logo on guns? In fact, the policy prohibits the use of the logo at fundraisers where there is shooting, though that seems to be flexible.
No, he said, they would not “co-brand” with firearms or knives. The return on investment just wasn’t there, he explained. I asked why they would turn down the money from such a program when it didn’t interfere with their larger projects (ketchup, clothing, etc.), and he explained that co-branding requires much internal coordination with lawyers, PR people, and others to manage it, and that I wouldn’t understand it. Hmmm.?
What if we offered to cover all their internal expenses, and then co-brand (use their logo on guns and knives) as a way to contribute to WWP, I asked. Would that be okay? I never got a straight answer to that.
There was much back and forth, with it quickly taking on the feeling of dealing with a politician who has to be there, but who doesn’t really want to answer the questions. To get the full flavor of the interview, you can download it or listen online. http://tinyurl.com/cugy6ft
Nardizzi even went on the offensive, saying he can’t believe we would withhold donations from wounded vets because we don’t get anything out of it (use of the logo). This feigned indignation didn’t fly. I explained that we have many avenues for donating to our veterans – WWP is only one of many – and that just because someone decides not to support a group which he thinks has taken an anti-gun stand doesn’t mean that person isn’t going to continue to contribute — just to other groups.
Having been in the gun rights fight since before the passage of the Gun Control Act of 1968, I’ve seen a lot of changes. For decades I’ve said this fight really is a struggle for public opinion. We have made great strides. Forty years ago a majority of the U.S. population thought that handguns should be severely restricted. That’s not the case now. Through education and exposure the public recognize gun owners as “normal” people just like them. This is huge.
On the other hand, there is a major push to demonize and marginalize gun owners, gun makers, and the shooting sports. It is in this light that I see the WWP policy of prohibiting gun and knife makers from using the WWP logo. What are they telling the world?
Take the longer view. Ebay blocked firearms from being listed. Paypal blocks the use of its service for buying guns. Google blocks guns, dealers and makers from searches in its shopping service. We have reports of banks closing the accounts of gun makers simply on the basis that they won’t do business with the firearms industry.
Each of these is a very public way of saying “We don’t do business with ‘those people’.” Each is a way of saying that reasonable and responsible people should have nothing to do with the firearms business. We are being put into the same box as pornography.
Sure, the Wounded Warrior Project is only too happy to take our money. They “allow” shoots and hunts as fundraisers, but they don’t want their logo associated with us. They are saying in a very public way that they refuse to be associated with us.
Some have suggested that there is pressure from the board, from big donors, or from elsewhere, to prevent the use of the WWP logo on “weapons.” Honestly, I don’t know and don’t care. I just know it to be a continuation of the demonization of firearms, the firearms industry, and those who use guns responsibly.
There is no doubt that the WWP does good work. That’s why I’m left disgusted and sad at this whole affair. But I know that we never win when we shrug and put up with this kind of treatment.
Throughout last week we continued to hear from people and groups which have been rebuffed by WWP because the groups were involved in firearms. One significant donation from a company in our industry was returned because it came though a faith-based foundation.
One element of this rather sad tale has been gratifying. The firearms community responded instantly to this with questions and pressure — so much so that WWP recognized they had to go public to answer the charges. The connectivity of the gun rights movement through the internet made that possible. It has changed the game.
I had hoped that WWP would come to its senses. Once it became clear that the policy would not change, many identified and donated to other groups which help vets, and which are only too happy to be associated with guns, hunting and shooting. Last Sunday I had someone from marineparents.com on the radio show. Each week for the rest of the year, we’ll have various groups which help wounded veterans on the radio to help them get additional exposure.
On Gun Talk Radio I created a “No Shrug” policy. We will always speak up. No longer will we just shrug when faced with a distorted media report about guns. No longer will we just go about our business when a politician makes outrageous claims about gun owners.
No longer will we continue to give money to, or do business with, any outfit which in any way labels us as “undesirables.” To shrug and just go on is to not just accept the demonetization but it actually agrees with it and supports it.
No longer.

Give a Toy Gun & Ignite the Spark of a Future Gun Owner
Dec. 6, 2012
What a great way to teach responsible gun ownership, while blowing the liberal brainwashing agenda of America's youth straight out of the water!
Manasquan, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- I must have been 9 or 10 when an uncle gave me a G14 1970s Combat Machine Cap Firing Gun for Christmas.
At the time it was not a toy I would have asked for, I think that my uncle gave it to me more to annoy my mother as I ran around shooting off the caps in the house, at the dog and my little brothers.
But that plastic M16 lookalike “Evil Black Rifle” was the spark that burned itself into my subconsciousness and from that Christmas forward I, at least in my young mind as I wasn’t old enough for the real thing, I was a gun owner.
Needless to say between my brothers and I we burned through our supply of snap caps in a day and never saw another “Ammunition Resupply” again, thanks Mom..? But that plastic rifle was the star of many backyard battles fought from holes and forts all across my neighborhood.
Now today most modern retailers have bought into the anti-gun hate speech that kids should never touch or for that matter see a gun, plastic or otherwise. So it can be a challenge finding a quality toy gun, that is not made from clear plastic or in wacky pinks and blues.
We need a gun that looks like the real thing to make it worthy of a child’s birthday or Christmas!
So in researching this article I found there are still some great choices and a great many thanks needs to be heaped on the Airsoft Movement as they embody the idea above that through toy guns children can learn not only the thrill of pulling the trigger but the responsibility care and caution that comes with owning something that “can put your eye out kid”.
Where to Find Quality Toy Guns?
My first thought was to look were I already spend most of my time looking for real guns and that is on GunBroker.com . Try this link to get right to their search for toy guns: http://tiny.cc/j2kuow . My only hesitation here is a lot of the real toy stuff, not counting Airsoft, is collectible and not quite what I had in mind when looking for a toy that can take some real play time punishment.
Surprisingly one of the best places I found on the web for true toy guns was Amazon. Here is just a few that I found that I would love to play with.
32″ AK47 SWAT Team Assault Rifle : High quality battery operated AK47 toy gun with lights and blasting sounds! Feel the action when you pull the trigger. This awesome AK47 gun measures 32″ long. Requires 3 AA batteries (not included). Ages 8 and up.
Big Tex Pistol & Holster Set : Big Tex Pistol & Holster Set, Cowboy Collection, Fires 12 Shot Ring Caps. Realistic size metal toy revolver with vinyl leather look holster and belt. Uses 12 shot ring cap not included.
Old Tex Rifle: Old Tex Rifle, Cowboy Collection, Fires 12 Shot Ring Cap. The Old Tex rifle is designed after the original rifle of the Wild West era. Measuring 30.5-inches, it is constructed with die-cast metal that looks like real antique metal and quality plastic that looks just like real wood. This rifle fires 12 shot ring caps. Makes a great Theatrical prop! Made in Italy. Features a full orange tip as required by Federal Law.
30″ Pump Action Shotgun: This fun 30″ pump action shotgun is awesome! Pull the trigger for realistic shooting sounds. After shooting, you can eject the shells from the side with the pump action! Shooting and seeing shotgun shells popping out with each pump action is really awesome! Your kids will love playing with this gun. Requires 2 AA batteries (not included). For ages 5 and up.
Ultimate Kids Toy Army Combat Set : 2 Battery Operated 4 Inch Grenades with ticking/explosion effect. Green/Black/or Gray. 2 Blue & Yellow Grenade with ticking/explosion with Red LED lights. One 24 Inch Camouflage Ak47 Dart Gun with 10 soft tip darts & 1 belt clip. One 20 Inch M16 Dart Gun with 10 Darts. One steel Handcuffs with 2 keys. Two Military Kids Size Helmet. Measures 8″ x 8″. Blue Grenade represent American MK 2 “practice grenade” during WW2. Yellow Grenade represent MK2 “high explosive ordinance” during WW2. 9 Inch Blade with Sheath.
As you can see they have a great variety of real toy guns and I did not even get into the vast selection of Airsoft Guns that Amazon has to offer.
So give a boy or girl a Toy Gun and plant the seed of gun ownership. Then watch that young person grow into a freedom loving, self dependent, responsible adult. God knows we could use more of those folks these days.
What a great way to teach responsible gun ownership, while blowing the liberal brainwashing agenda of America's youth straight out of the water!

House GOP Leaders Purged Conservatives Using Secret Criteria List
RINOs Expose True Colors
(Big Government) - House Republican leaders used a secret criteria list to decide which conservatives to purge from powerful House committees, Breitbart News has learned. As this time, it appears they will keep the criteria list hidden from the public, too. Spokespeople for members of House GOP leadership have refused to discuss details about the list on the record with press.
Because GOP Leadership won't discuss the list, it’s unclear what specific criteria the list contained and how much of a role it played in the conservative purge. It’s also unclear which member of House Republican leadership initiated this process.
In remarks to the Heritage Foundation’s Bloggers Briefing on Tuesday, Kansas Republican Rep. Tim Huelskamp confirmed the existence of such a list.
“We’ve heard from multiple sources that someone walked in with a list of votes and said if you didn’t reach a particular scorecard of what was considered the right vote – which by the way, in most cases, was not the conservative position – then [they said] ‘we’re going to have to remove you from the committee,’” Huelskamp said.
“All that took place behind closed doors, which is again a problem with Washington, D.C. – whether it’s the budget negotiations, whether it’s everything else, it’s usually done behind closed doors," he explained. "I think, as conservatives, this is where we can win: We’ve got to be willing and able to talk about things in public instead of being afraid of actual public scrutiny.”
Huelskamp later told Breitbart News he thinks House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and Whip Kevin McCarthy owe it to the American people to be transparent about this decision making process – and that they should publicly release the list.
“In the name of transparency and openness, they most certainly should release the criteria,” Huelskamp said in an email. “Republican leadership promised America a new era of transparency – they should deliver on it.”
Huelskamp was one of four conservative Republicans that GOP leadership removed from committees on which they’d have the ability to affect fiscal policy. He and Michigan Republican Rep. Justin Amash were pulled from the House Budget Committee and Reps. David Schweikert of Arizona and Walter Jones of North Carolina got yanked off the House Financial Services Committee.
Amash, who joined Huelskamp at the Heritage Foundation event on Tuesday, said nobody in leadership even informed him of the move. “We haven’t even been told officially that I’ve been removed from the Budget Committee,” Amash said. “I’ve had to read it in the newspapers. So, actually, I’ve received not a single call from anyone in leadership. Not a single email. I’ve received no messages about it. I’ve been not told about what committees I will be on, if in fact I have been removed from Budget – which I have to assume is true.”
Amash added that, like Republican Study Committee chairman Rep. Jim Jordan, he thinks this type of behavior from GOP leadership is dangerous for the party.
“For a party that’s trying to expand its base and make sure that it reaches out to young people and new groups, I think it’s pretty outrageous frankly,” Amash said. “It’s pretty clear I come from a more libertarian wing of the party – this is the growing portion of the Republican Party. And, really, it’s a slap in the face of all young people who are out there thinking about being Republicans, want to be part of this party and are being told ‘well, if you disagree with leadership just a couple times, we’re going to send you home and we’re going to tell you you’re off the committee and you don’t get to participate.’”
Amash said, too, that he voted with Budget Committee Republicans “95 percent of the time” over the past two years. “On the 5 percent of disagreements, those were on some big issues at times and I think that we didn’t take a strong enough approach in dealing with our debt – which is why we’re all here,” he said. “It’s not acceptable to have budgets that are unbalanced until the year 2040.”
