Crisis, averted: USPS to destroy “Let’s move!” stamps over safety concerns?

10/11/13

"Hell, the way they were acting I thought for sure it was Michelle's ass doing a cannonball."

Officials were apparently most profoundly concerned with the stamps that depicted a child doing a handstand without a helmet, another with someone doing a cannonball into a swimming pool, and one with a skateboarder — sans kneepads. Who does that?

President approves Dept. of Transportation proposal to counter anti-Obama Trucker protest Friday, October 11?
Sources within the Department of Transportation have revealed that their plan to use National Guard resources to close federally funded Interstate Route 495, circling the nation’s capital, have been approved by unknown White House officials and will be implemented on Friday morning, October 11, in order to thwart the three day Trucker slowdown announced on the Capitol Beltway starting that date, using the federal government shutdown as justification.

Not Ready For Primetime: Obamacare Goes Hollywood

10/11/13

Obama and his Hollywood cronies are taking nausiation to a new level. And if  you thought 21st century televison wasn't agenda-driven enough already. It's time to scrap the television set.

Will Obamacare become plot fodder for CBS’ Hostages and Under The Dome? A $500,000 grant awarded this week to USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center’s Hollywood Health & Society program certainly suggests it’s a possibility. In the latest push to get Tinseltown to promote President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, the decade-old program has received the money from the private California Endowment to give Hollywood producers, writers and execs details about the newly launched health insurance initiative. “Our experience has shown that the public gets just as much, if not more, information about current events and important issues from their favorite television shows and characters as they do from the news media and online resources,” said Hollywood Health & Society’s Martin Kaplan in a statement today. “This grant will allow us to ensure that industry practitioners have up-to-date, relevant facts on health care reform to integrate into their storylines and projects.” Hostages’co-EP Jennifer Cecil sits on Hollywood Health & Society’s Advisory Board as does Under The Dome EP Neal Baer. So does Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins EP Chris Nee among others. The grant comes just over a week after Jennifer Hudson appeared in a pro-Obamacare Scandal parody video produced by Will Ferrell’s Funny Or Die.

A spokesperson from China's Health and Family Planning watchdog says no comments to the recent report concerning Russia's free health care, as the situation differs greatly from country to country.

Media reports which said that Russia is to announce free health care for its entire population have aroused concerns among Chinese netizens that domestic health care needs a change. Spokesperson Deng Haihua claims that Chinese media misread the source information relating to Russia's health care.

"Health care reform is a worldwide difficulty," Deng said. China has been speeding up the establishment of a universal health care system, which can cover every resident in both rural and urban areas by the year 2020, he added.

"While You Were Distracted" Update: Rep. Raúl Grijalva on Gov’t Shutdown & Why the Impasse Won’t Slow the Fight for Immigration Reform

10/11/13

The Other Hand is working feverously while the MSM (and unwittingly many of our own) line up their Mexican dominos...

DEMOCRACY NOW: As lawmakers face increasing pressure to come to a resolution 10 days into the government shutdown, we are joined by Arizona Democrat Rep. Raúl Grijalva, co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. "This shutdown is contrived," Grijalva says. In speaking about shutdown, Grijalva objects to oil and gas exploration being allowed on federal land while the public remains locked out. He continues to push for the passage of comprehensive immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship. He was among eight Democratic lawmakers arrested on Tuesday in a large civil disobedience rally for immigration reform on the National Mall. "The fight over the debt ceiling and the budget is a harbinger of the fight over immigration," Grijalva says. "Those 30 to 40 to 45 tea party extremists have done nothing but to try to block any effort with threats within their own caucus on immigration reform ... The urgency is still there, and now I think it’s up to us and community organizations throughout this country to ratchet up the pressure."

Obamacare 'off the table'
House Republicans, and notably Ted Cruz in the Senate, led the fight against Obama's signature health care law. They made defunding or delaying Obamacare a demand in legislation the House repeatedly sent to the Democratic-controlled Senate, only to see it die there.
Apparently, it's now dead in the House, too.
"That's currently off the table now," Republican Rep. James Lankford said in an interview on "The Lead with Jake Tapper." "That's obviously not going to happen at this point."
Lankford did say that Republicans will now instead ask for a one-year delay on penalties for those who don't sign up for health care insurance.

15-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Streaking Commits Suicide Days Later

15-year-old Christian Adamek, a popular student at Sparkman High School in Harvest, Alabama, hanged himself Oct. 2 and died from his injuries two days later. His death came just a week after he was arrested for streaking across the Sparkman High football field during a Sept. 27 football game.

A video of the streaking event was made using Vine and later uploaded to Youtube (it’s now been removed) and students began referring to Adamek as a “legend” for his actions on the field.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, many in the community are wondering what prompted Adamek's death and some are blaming the local media coverage of the streaking. The day before his suicide, Sparkman High principal Michael Campbell told WHNT (who have now memory-holed their coverage) that the streaking incident was serious: “There’s the legal complications. Public lewdness and court consequences outside of school with the legal system, as well as the school consequences that the school system has set up.”
WHNT also aired this news story (deleted from the WHNT website, but uploaded to YouTube by user xrayultra) in which the principal discusses the student’s potential punishment at length. The news story is scary enough for an adult facing punishment, so it's not hard to imagine how a frightened, embarrassed teenager might feel when seeing  it:

After his death, his sister admitted Adamek was facing expulsion from the school for streaking. And other reports point out that in Alabama, indecent exposure charges are tied to Alabama’s sex offender laws. While the chances of Adamek being charged with two misdemeanors and placed on the sex offender registry were quite low, as Tim Cushingreminds us, “the reality of the situation isn't immediately apparent to those trapped inside, not while the machinery is still in motion.”
At Wednesday’s memorial service for Adamek, his Boy Scout master remembered him as someone who “always brightened the room.” And his mother Angela spoke to his friends in attendance, reminding them that it’s still ok to have a little fun:
“Remember to smile, don’t be afraid to do something goofy and remember the consequences of those actions, ask for help when you need it, ask for help if you think your friends need it if you don’t know what to do, be quirky, be happy, be smart.”

Federal Courthouse Shooting In West Virginia

10/10/13

A gunman, Thomas Piccard, a retired Virginia police officer, reportedly opened fire on a federal courthouse in West Virginia Wednesday afternoon before being shot and killed by authorities.

According to West Virginia Metro News, the gunman used a rifle and reloaded at least twice, before authorities returned fire fatally wounding the man. The outlet reported that no one was injured.

Mr. Piccard apparently didn't get the memo that Sheets Byrd is already dead.

RACIAL HATRED: Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves Speaks in Harlem on Reparations

10/10/13

While in New York attending the United National General Assembly of Heads of State, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines came to Harlem to join the New York City-based December 12th Movement International Secretariat on Sept. 24 in their report back to our community on the CARICOM First Regional Reparations Conference, held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines Sept. 14-17.
At the forum, held at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building, Gonsalves stated, “As to where we are with the reparations issue and where we are going to, for 30, 40 or more years in the Caribbean, we have had discussions among scholars, small groups of persons in the Caribbean and in the Diaspora on the issue of reparations. It has reached center stage now with the decision of the 14 member states of the Caribbean Community [CARICOM] to establish a Caribbean Reparations Commission to spearhead the work for reparations from Britain in the form of the former British colonies, France in relation to Haiti and the Netherlands as regards to Surinam.
“We first took the decision in early July at the [CARICOM] Summit in Trinidad. My chairmanship runs through the 30th of June, although I am on the Bureau of the Heads of Government Conference until the 31st of December next year. I’m hoping that we could get letters off during my chairmanship to the European governments so that we can commence in earnest the conversation, the discussion, the demand, the claim for reparations,” he continued.
“If those discussions do not prove to be satisfactory, it is our intention to approach the international code of justice in the Hague to make the legal demand within one or more of the international conventions which form the body of international law, but more particularly, the international convention to end racial discrimination, in which the issue of the legacy of native genocide and slavery is addressed,” said Gonsalves, “and the consequences thereof with those who have been responsible and have an obligation to repair the legacy which constitutes consequences of native genocide and African slavery.”
In conclusion, Gonsalves stated, “This is, in a nutshell, what this is all about. Shun off all the adornments, because on this matter, we have to keep our focus very clear, very sharp, and we have to be united and prepared to work. The case for reparations is unanswerably strong.”
State Sen. Bill Perkins and City Councilman Charles Barron presented a special proclamation to Gonsalves for his extraordinary work on international humanitarian economic and social justice, and reparations.
The December 12th Movement delegation to the CARICOM Reparations Regional Conference included Roger Wareham Esq., Omowale Clay, Kamau Brown and Jamal Johnson. Clay gave an overview of the history of the reparations movement in the United States, culminating in the historic United Nations World Conference Against Racism in Durban South Africa in 2001, which declared the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism a crime against humanity; the Millions for Reparations March in Washington, D.C., in 2002; and the subsequent lawsuits against U.S. government and corporations.
“This important first CARICOM Regional Reparations Conference has revitalized our reparations work internationally. We must intensify our work, develop our strategy and tactics, and mobilize our people.” said Clay He ended with their reparations slogan, “They stole us. They sold us. They owe us!”

Gov. actuaries say ObamaCare will increase health care spending by $621 billion over next 10 years

10/10/13

President Obama has made many promises about his signature health care plan, but one of the simplest was an assurance that it would lower national health care spending and save every family thousands of dollars.
For example, in May 2009 he hailed "comprehensive health care reform -- so that we can do what I pledged to do as a candidate and save a typical family an average of $2,500 on their health care costs in the coming years."
But now government actuaries have reached a different conclusion, finding that ObamaCare will actually increase health care spending by $621 billion over the next 10 years.

DOJ: There IS Such a Thing As a Free Lunch--for Furloughed Feds

10/10/13

(CNS) - There’s No Such Thing as a Free Lunch”—the title of a book published by Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman--may be economic fact, but that did not deter the U.S. Justice Department from informing furloughed department workers that they can have one.
In an “Ethics Q&A” the DOJ published on its website advising furloughed employees on what they can and cannot ethically do during a government shutdown, the department said it was okay for them to accept free sandwiches from commercial enterprises as long as those sandwiches were offered free to all federal workers and not just some.
“May employees accept a discount offered by a bank or other commercial organization?” the “Ethics Q&A” asked rhetorically.
“Generally, yes,” said the response, “IF the discount is offered to ALL federal employees regardless of pay or agency. (For example, a local deli is offering free sandwiches to all federal government employees for the first two days of the shutdown.”
The “Ethics Q&A” also said furloughed department employees could accept discounts to buy pizzas—so long as the discount was available to all would-be pizza purchasers.
“Employees also may accept a discount offered to the public,” said the advisory. “(For example, a local pizza delivery shop offers large pizzas for $7 every Monday).”
