America's Other War: Mexican Mayor Accused of Ties to Drug Cartel

5/17/2014

MEXICO CITY – The mayor of a town in the western state of Michoacan faces charges of colluding with the Caballeros Templarios drug cartel, Mexico’s Judiciary Council said Friday.

Aguililla Mayor Jesus Cruz Valencia was ordered held pending trial, the council said.

Cruz Valencia is locked up at a federal penitentiary in Tepic, capital of the western state of Nayarit.

He becomes the fourth Michoacan politician in recent weeks to be indicted for alleged links to the Caballeros Templarios (Knights Templar), who supplement their drug profits with sidelines in extortion and kidnapping.

The public servants facing charges include the state’s former interim governor, Jesus Reyna.

Federal security forces have occupied parts of Michoacan since mid-January in a push to take down the Templarios and bring under control the armed militias that formed to defend communities from the cartel.

Pathetic: Jeb Bush Admires LBJ; Baffled by Opposition to Cheap Foreign Labor Replacing American Workers

5/17/2014

Jeb Bush might just turn out to be the best Democrat candidate for 2016. Speaking to an audience in Florida, Bush expressed admiration for the architect of the Great Society and the Vietnam War.
He vowed to approach the presidency as “master of the Senate,” as biographer Robert Caro described Johnson.
“He went and he cajoled, he begged, he threatened, he loved, he hugged, he did what leaders do, which is they personally get engaged to make something happen,’’ Bush said of Johnson. Bush cited Caro’s latest book about Johnson, The Passage of Power, which covers the first part of Johnson’s presidency.
The wheeling and dealing Johnson loved and relished is what will be needed to pass bills such as immigration regulations. That process is also how government gets expanded and cronyism thrives, as Peter Schweizer’s nonpartisan Government Accountability Institute and directer Stephen K. Bannon documented in “Boomtown.”
Bush also admitted that he’s absolutely clueless as to why Americans don’t want to import millions of units of cheap foreign labor when there are tens of millions of Americans out of work and middle-class wages have been declining.
“For the life of me I have a hard time understanding why people are fearful of our own heritage, our own history,” Bush reportedly said. “The rules are you come to this country, you pursue your dreams, you create value for yourself and your families and others and great things happens to you and to our country. Why would we ignore that at time when we need to restart and rejuvenate our economy? It makes no sense to me.”
Bush seems to believe that American workers don’t want to take care of their families, don’t want to pursue their dreams, and don’t want to participate in the economy.

Gearing Up: Mission PD powers up with military tank

5/16/2014

Photo:
You may have noticed a large brown vehicle that looks like something you would see the military use.
This is the Mission Police Department’s latest crime fighting tool.
It’s called a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, or for short MRAP.
"Since last Monday, we’ve had this vehicle at the Mission Police Department for our SWAT Team to utilize in volatile situations," said Chief Robert Dominguez.
It came just in time; Tuesday it was used for the first time as police responded to a shots fired call where a man barricaded himself inside his home with a shot-gun.
"We didn’t expect to use it so soon."
"The MRAP is virtually indestructible, it has several layers of steel and bullet proof windows, and if it happens to catch on fire--these fire extinguishers will put it out."
This vehicle costs nearly $800,000, but Mission Police got it for free through a military surplus program.
"From my understanding it was used in Afghanistan and a lot of policing agencies are now receiving vehicle coming from military zones."
Sergeant Ted Rodriguez said equipment like this helps police get closer to the action.
"Being in this type of vehicle, it doesn’t matter how many times they try and shoot at you, they are just wasting their ammo.”
The vehicle is equipped for desert action but Chief Robert Dominguez plans to make a few alterations.
"We are going to put our logos on it, lights, sirens."
That way when it hits the streets, you know who’s is coming.
The vehicle is free, but if the government needs it for war again, it must be given back
Mission isn't the only police department to receive one of these vehicles.
So have Harlingen, San Benito and Brownsville.

Obama Administration's Unenforced Deportation Laws A Direct Threat To Our Children: Illegal Immigrant Rapes 13 Year Old

5/16/2014

URGENT NOTICE: Thousands of illegal immigrants, with offenses ranging from sex crimes against children to drug charges to murder, were recently released from U.S. prisons. Due to the Obama administation's decision to place amnesty above the safety of communities, more than ever before, children are being placed at high risk by the presence of undocumented, unregistered foreigners.  In addition to the political pawns described above, many of their offspring, who bear the innocent, almost victim-like, false flag known as "anchor babies", also pose a threat to the young and vulnerable.

Teen has sex with underage girl after she runs away to a party

A teen is behind bars after he allegedly had sex with a 13-year-old girl he met at a party.
Pharr police responded to a call on the 700 block of La Quinta Drive in Pharr Sunday morning.
Documents state that the mother and the victim told police that Rigoberto Castillo sexually assaulted the girl.
According to Pharr police, the girl ran away from home, and went to a party with friends the day before.
The 13-year-old returned home Sunday morning.
The victim’s mother said her daughter had a swollen lip and a hickey on her chest.
Authorities said 17-year-old Castillo admitted he had sex with the underage girl.
Castillo told police the sexual act was consensual.
A judge arraigned the teen, and charged him with aggravated sexual assault.
A bond of $10,000 was set for Castillo.

Fidel’s Estranged Daughter Says Time Not Right for Return to Cuba

MIAMI – Alina Fernandez Revuelta, the estranged daughter of Fidel Castro, said in an interview with Efe that despite the pain she feels over not being able to see her mother, the time is not right for a return to Cuba.

At 58, Alina Fernandez lives in Miami in a humble residence where she shares memories and shows photographs in which, dressed in white, she is embracing her father, a smiling Fidel Castro wearing his traditional olive green military uniform.

She fled Cuba in 1993 and, despite the time that has passed and the fact that the regulations for traveling to the island have been eased, Castro’s daughter has “the sensation and instinct” that she still should not return.

“I don’t want to have problems. At this age a person is less adventurous,” she told Efe with a certain amount of emotion and a long silence broken only to confess that she feels sadness and bitterness about the return that so far has been impossible: “It hurts me a lot, because my mother is older.”

Fernandez was born in 1956 to Fidel Castro and Natalia Revuelta, a socialite married to a prominent doctor.

“Seeing your mother and wanting to do something for her is a law of nature, it’s something visceral,” Alina said.

Her mother is 88, just a few months older than Castro, whose birthday is in August, but the feelings of a daughter for the man who heavily influenced her life and governed Cuba for half a century are completely different.

Asked how she feels about her father, Alina replied: “I suffered from my bullying and my punishments, and I consider him a person with a rather elevated level of cruelty, but I never came to hate him.”

Alina, who did not learn Castro was her father until she was 10 years old, says now that they never had a close relationship.

“Fidel Castro was not a father. Sometimes he landed at home. He was a capricious visitor, and he had attacks of paternity as well as long periods of distancing himself. He was an omnipresent gentleman on the television, in his speeches, but he was an absent father,” she explains.

Seated in the parlor of her house, serene and friendly, she displays a small cardboard box with dozens of photographs, very well arranged and cared for, in some of which a young Alina can be also seen with her uncle, Raul Castro, now Cuba’s president, and she recalls once again the sensations of a past with wounds that are “very difficult to heal.”

Fidel and Raul, she says, “are completely different.”

“Raul is a family man, who has been close to his children, and that says everything, and Fidel Castro is a type of solitary person and with few emotional roots,” Alina says.

Alina Fernandez, a model in Havana in her youth, a translator later in France and author of the book “Castro’s Daughter: An Exile’s Memoir of Cuba,” fled Cuba with a forged Spanish passport, wearing a wig and disguised as a tourist.

She has a 37-year-old daughter, also named Alina, who is a U.S. citizen and with whom she occasionally speaks about her grandfather, but the granddaughter has “the ability to see the positive side of everything” and travels every year to Cuba to see “the few friends that remain to her there.”

Chilean Lawmakers Raise Corporate Taxes to Fund Social Programs

VALPARAISO, Chile – Chile’s government hailed the passage by the lower house of a tax bill that aims to raise an additional $8.2 billion to fund social programs and a public education overhaul, one of President Michelle Bachelet’s main campaign promises.

“This is a time to celebrate because we’ve taken a very important step toward completing a reform that will help fulfill the country’s dreams, that will guarantee high-quality and free education, that will combat inequality and invest in people,” Finance Minister Alberto Arenas said.

The measure now goes to the Senate, where it is all but certain to pass.

Arenas touted the fact that the lower house approved the bill by a wide margin.

Among other things, the bill calls for gradually increasing the corporate tax rate from a current level of 20 percent to 25 percent in 2017, provides new and increased incentives for saving and investment, and includes a package of measures to combat tax evasion and avoidance.

The bill also includes an article to eliminate a provision established by the 1973-1990 Pinochet dictatorship that allowed corporations to shelter a portion of their profits from tax.

In addition, the legislation would raise taxes on alcoholic drinks and tobacco products, lend greater powers to the country’s internal revenue service and boost the levy on stamps and seals.

The tax hike aims to raise the revenue needed for greater spending on public education and for shoring up the public health care and pension systems, as well as for reducing the structural deficit in keeping with Bachelet’s goal of balancing the budget by 2018.

Five young men involved in illegal activity say they will not stop

Having a conscience not an issue in ripping off victims, scammers say

DESPITE the clampdown by Jamaica's law enforcement agents, supported by their colleagues in the United States, lottery scammers have vowed to continue with their illegal activity, arguing that it is the only route to quick wealth.
Five scammers who spoke with the Jamaica Observer recently were not disturbed by the fact their activities have resulted in Jamaica's name being splattered across the pages, screens and airwaves of global news organisations.
The scammers, all based in Montego Bay, are between the ages of 17 and 27 and have acquired immense wealth in the form of houses, motor vehicles and stored cash.
"A my life dis, a mi nine-to five dis", one of the young men told the Sunday Observer. "The Government a try stop wi and dem nah provide a better alternative. A five grand fi minimum wage and dat don't even shake mi tuition," the scammer professed.
Others claimed that the illegal activity was a means of survival - a quick way to a luxurious lifestyle and ultimately to rid themselves of poverty.
Many of the lottery scammers are from the lower and middle classes of the society. They said they have experienced hunger and suffered hardships. But the 'game', as they call the lottery scam, came to their rescue and their lives have been completely transformed.
"Mi used to sell inna di market and thing, but den mi have a lot a bredrin weh dem do it, and dem link mi up and seh a ya so di thing deh, yuh nuh, so di thing set", another young scammer said.
"Mi decide mi mind seh mi a go try it one day, yuh nuh, and mi duh suh an mi mek a five bills US. From deh so di thing tek off and mi jus into it", he went on.
Another shared a similar story: "Yuh know seh mi did a work a one hotel though, and mi get fired and thing, and one a mi very close friend start it and mi si seh a deh so di money deh, yu zimme.
This 'job' is one that is open to all and requires no set qualification. There is no age limit and no credential is needed to be successful in this 'field' .
A boy, aged 17, explained why he became a member of the scamming team: "Mi did a go pon di school, yu zeet, but mi si seh right now it nuh mek nuh sense mi a touch di school, cah money cyaan mek pon di school, yu zeet. So mi just stop go a school and tek up the game, yu zeet."
Explaining that he has dubbed scamming the, 'Ghetto Game' , the 17-year-old said that he has already bought a small studio apartment from the proceeds.
Another boasted: "I have gained a car and I also start building my house right now."
The young men described as 'unbelievable' the wealth they have acquired by picking up the phone and calling people they deem to be 'clients' .
"Right now mi have mi car deh drive, mi big van and mi have mi big house said way. Mi build outta it and mi have a bus pon di road said way," stated another of the scammers, who described himself as being "well off".
Others have also built houses, schooled themselves, sent their relatives to school, bought motorbikes, high-end cars and are now able to assist friends and family members who are in dire financial need.
The lottery scam is said to have originated in Montego Bay during 2007. Since then its prominence has increased so much so that the deed is no longer limited to the 'second city' of 82,000 inhabitants, but has spread islandwide.
In July 2012, Senior Superintendent of Police Fitz Bailey, then head of the Organised Crime Investigation Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, gave the Sunday Observer an update on the crackdown of scammers by the authorities.
"Between 2007 and 2009 the police confiscated US$283,000 in cash from criminals connected to the scam, 40 high-end luxury vehicles were also confiscated and 102 persons, mostly under age 30, detained," Bailey stated.
The surge in the illegal activity and the resulting murders linked to scamming led to the formation of a special police unit - the Lottery Scam Task Force - which is primarily responsible for clamping down on these activities.
Jamaica's Parliament also enacted legislation that hitherto did not exist, to try and thwart scammers and make the activity a criminal offence.
Some arrests have been made, many of them since the start of this year, but the practice remains alive and kicking, and victims, particularly retirees in the United States, are still undergoing financial destruction as a result of the Jamaican scam artists.
Montego Bay too, where it all started, still experiences outbreaks of crime and violence associated with the fraud, and the western city has failed to throw its tag of 'Scamming Capital' into the garbage bin.
The Statistical Institute of Jamaica reported recently that the "unemployment rate averaged 14.02 per cent between 1991 and 2013, reaching an all-time high of 16.50 per cent in the fourth quarter of 1997 and a record low of 9.80 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2007".
The creative minds behind lottery scamming are listed among the 14.02 per cent of unemployed people in Jamaica and they believe that they have found an ingenious way of filling the employment gap.
The scam requires personal information from individuals overseas in order for it to be successful. This information is provided on what is called a 'lead sheet' .
One scammer explained how he acquired these sheets for use.
"A broker enuh. Di white man dem from foreign sell dem, yuh zimme. Like 600 names, yuh can get dat fi US$500."
He further stated that when shoppers fill out coupons, workers at the stores scan the documents and sell them, in turn benefitting both themselves and the scammers.
This sheet is equipped with names, addresses, social security numbers, and contact telephone numbers of individuals living overseas, most of whom are the elderly. These individuals are mostly retired or working. Others have disposable income.
The fact that most of the victims are elderly amounted to little or nothing in the hearts, minds and consciences of the Jamaican lottery scammers.
"Conscience? Mi neva go a dem yard enuh. A call mi call dem pon di phone enuh and mek dem know seh dem win and from deh suh di thing just tek off," one said sternly in response to the Sunday Observer's query as to whether they were not bothered by what they were doing.
"No! None at all, not one bit," another said before the former could even complete his statement.
"No sah, bada wah man! A mi wen bruk before and now mi have mi own money, can duh wah mi feel," was the 17-year-old's response.
Poverty was once largely blamed for the start of lottery scamming activities, following complaints of insufficient jobs. However, even folk who are educated up to the tertiary level are said to be involved nowadays in the bid to 'earn' quick and easy money.
And the presence of the new police task force, as well as the existing law enforcement units, has failed to deter members of the group, who have said that nothing will stop them, despite admitting that they feared and respected the men in uniform.
"We worry enuh, because nobody nuh like jail. As yuh seet enuh, a 35 years dem a gi yu. So we nuh wah nuh police fi ketch wi enuh, suh from wi hear seh dem a come enuh wi affi jus cut and keep the place clean, so wi nuh run inna dem way," said one of the scammers when asked whether they were afraid of the police.
He said that it was not his choice to refuse to stop, but if he is able to accumulate at least $30 million and is able to care for his family's needs, along with owning some businesses, he will be able to stop.
Another stated that his family did not approve of his involvement in the scam. However, he vowed that only death could make him stop.
While these young men believe that they have found the way to ensuring that they will be wealthy for the rest of their lives, the authorities are increasingly coming under pressure to put an end to the illegal act that is wiping away the life savings of thousands of Americans and creating a huge wave of crime and violence stretching from the second city to other parts of Jamaica.

The Real War Against Women: Sudan judge says pregnant Christian woman to hang for apostasy

5/16/2014

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AFP) — A Sudanese judge yesterday sentenced a Christian woman to hang for apostasy, in a ruling which Britain denounced as "barbaric".
Born to a Muslim father, the woman was convicted under the Islamic sharia law that has been in force in Sudan since 1983 and outlaws conversions on pain of death.
Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag, 27, is married to a Christian and eight months pregnant, human rights activists say.
"We gave you three days to recant, but you insist on not returning to Islam. I sentence you to be hanged," Judge Abbas Mohammed al-Khalifa told the woman, addressing her by her father's Muslim name, Adraf Al-Hadi Mohammed Abdullah.
Khalifa also sentenced Ishag to 100 lashes for "adultery". Under Sudan's interpretation of sharia, a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man and any such relationship is regarded as adulterous.
Britain's minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds, said he was "truly appalled" at the death penalty decision.
"This barbaric sentence highlights the stark divide between the practices of the Sudanese courts and the country's international human rights obligations," he said in a statement.
Ishag, dressed in traditional Sudanese robes with her head covered, reacted without emotion when Abbas delivered the verdict at a court in the Khartoum district of Haj Yousef where many Christians live.
Earlier in the hearing, an Islamic religious leader spoke with her in the caged dock for about 30 minutes, trying to convince her to change her mind.
But she calmly told the judge: "I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy."
Sudan has an Islamist government but, other than floggings, extreme sharia law punishments have been rare.
"The fact that a woman has been sentenced to death for her religious choice, and to flogging for being married to a man of an allegedly different religion is appalling and abhorrent," said Amnesty International's Sudan researcher, Manar Idriss.
If the death sentence is carried out, she will be the first person executed for apostasy under the 1991 penal code, said Christian Solidarity Worldwide, a British-based group working for religious freedom.
Sudan is perceived as one of the most corrupt countries in the world, ranked 174th by campaign group Transparency International.

ICE says it won't deport illegal immigrant living in Tucson church

ice deportation.jpg
COURTESY OF ICE
A Mexican man who violated an order to leave the United States by taking sanctuary in a Tucson church will remain there despite immigration officials' announcement that they won't try to deport him.
Daniel Neyoy Ruiz was supposed to leave the country by the end of Tuesday after being caught by immigration authorities following a traffic stop in Tucson.
Neyoy Ruiz refused to leave and instead took sanctuary at Southside Presbyterian Church on Tuesday afternoon.
On Thursday, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement said they would not seek to immediately deport Neyoy Ruiz.
"After conducting a thorough review of Mr. Ruiz's immigration case, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has decided to exercise prosecutorial discretion by not taking immediate action on Mr. Ruiz's removal order," spokeswoman Amber Cargile wrote in a statement.
But that doesn't sufficiently keep Neyoy Ruiz safe from deportation, a representative of his said.
The 36-year-old maintenance supervisor at a Tucson apartment complex will continue to live in the church with his wife and American-born son.
"The long and short of it is that while it's certainly very comforting to know that the ICE removal operations don't plan on raiding the church and taking Daniel away, this move, while it's a small step, it's just that  -- a small step," said Sarah Lanius an immigration rights activist working with Neyoy Ruiz.
Neyoy Ruiz still faces too many risks in Tucson because it falls under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Border Patrol, Lanius said.
Neyoy Ruiz said he does not want to separate from his family, especially his 13-year-old son, who is an American citizen. He does not have a prior criminal record and contributes to his community and church, Neyoy Ruiz said.
Neyoy Ruiz entered the United States illegally in 2000. In 2011, an Arizona Department of Public Safety officer turned Neyoy Ruiz over to immigration officials after pulling him over because his exhaust pipe released too much smoke, his attorney said.
He lost a series of immigration court cases and was ordered to leave the country.

Nanny state of the week: Fairfax, VA, wants to limit the right to assemble

5/15/2014

What’s that the First Amendment says about the ability of individuals to do as they please?
“Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble….”
WE'RE HAVING A PARTY: Just keep the guest list under 50 or else the city government in Fairfax, Va., wants to know about it.
WE’RE HAVING A PARTY: Just keep the guest list under 50 or else the city government in Fairfax, Va., wants to know about it.
Someone needs to inform policymakers in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Fairfax, Va., that limiting the size of gatherings has never been considered sound policy in these United States.
The proposed zoning ordinance limits “group assembly” at residences to 49 people a day. Such gatherings “shall not occur more frequently than three times in any 40-day period.”
County officials say they have received complaints about group meetings at homes.
How many complaints? According to Pat Herrity, a city supervisor, Fairfax’s Department of Code Compliance received a grand total of six complaints about large gatherings last year, which works out to less than 1 percent of all complaints received by the department.
In other words, once every two months last year, one of the 23,000 residents of Fairfax threw a big party. Clearly, something must be done to bring order to this madness.
Like most seemingly well-intentioned efforts to limit individuals’ rights, this one has its share of unintended consequences.
Church groups, scouting organizations and even sports fans who like to have a bunch of friends over for the Super Bowl could be targeted by the proposed law.
Herrity said it’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.
John Whitehead, an attorney and president of the civil-libertarian Rutherford Institute, told Ward the effort is “nefarious” because it shows the city government assumes private property belongs to it, rather than to individual owners.
For their efforts to regulate the size of community gatherings and limit the right to peacefully assemble, the city government of Fairfax wins this week’s Watchdog Nanny State award. Its prize is never getting invited to another Super Bowl party — ever.
