Is bigger better? Uproar over political signs

9/5/2014

Photo:
Some say bigger is better and if getting your name out during election season is the objective, then Democratic Candidate for County Judge Joe Rivera has the right idea. He’s posted a giant sign at several spots throughout Brownsville, including one near 7th Street and frontage.
Supporters of the Republican Incumbent Carlos Cascos, said the signs are too big as per city ordinance - and are therefore illegal.
Cascos' Chief of Staff Chris Valadez emailed the City of Brownsville regarding his concern about the possible unfair advantage.
“We just want to know if the city's not going to enforce it, to let us know, so we can put up signs of that size," Valadez said.
The city's political sign ordinance states a sign must meet a list of seven criteria to be considered a political sign-  and calls for a sign to be no larger than 8 feet - and while the difference between Rivera’s signs and all other signs around it is obvious - a city spokeswoman said there's more research that needs to be done in order to determine if these signs violate any criteria of the city's signage ordinance.
Rivera said this size of signs were used during the last run-off election, by several justice of the peace candidates, without any issues.
He is not taking the signs down unless Brownsville city officials demand the signs be removed.
“We took it for granted, because if they were used in the run-off elections and they were all over the city of Brownsville and nobody told them it was illegal, I felt and we felt, right - that it was ok," Rivera said.
The judge's race is shaping-up to be a close race and Valadez said he just wants an even playing field, especially in the eyes of voters.
"Marketing is everything,  you have to get your name out there and the bigger the sign the more views you're going to get,” Valadez said. “It's the (voters) that don't normally go out and vote all the time, consistently- those are the (voters) that may be swayed by the bigger sign or more visible sign," Valadez said.

Diversion: Middle east beheadings big news, while Mexican beheadings happen regularly

Executed and beheaded the brother PRD federal deputy in Guerrero

Decapitated, with signs of torture and narco message,  the body of Joel Miranda Salgado, brother of PRD federal deputy Marino Miranda was found, in the municipality of Teloloapa.

The Attorney General of Guerrero confirmed the killing of Joel Miranda Salgado, who was beheaded.. The deceased was the brother of PRD Federal Deputy Marino Miranda Salgado.

The PGJE confirmed that around 10 am, the police received a report that in the interior of the supply store Diana, located in Colonia Vicente Guerrero, was found the decapitated body.

Local, State and Mexican Army elements arrived at the site of the discovery.

Corporations confirmed that it was Joel Miranda Salgado, brother of Marino Miranda Salgado, former Mayor of Teloloapan and current Federal Deputy for the federal electoral district 02.

The case was referred to the Special State Prosecutor for the Northern Region of Guerrero.

Comment from Pepe of  BB:

Teloloapan is located in the northwest of Guerrero, in an area controlled by La Familia Michoacán (LFM), but disputed by Guerreros Unidos (GU).  This area has seen some brutal narco violence in the last couple years.  LFM uses Teloloapan as their base in the region. GU holds nearby Iguala as its northern base of operations.

This is an area where local autodefensas  have arisen in the last year or so.  Earlier this year, federal diputado and former Mayor of Teloloapan Marino Miranda Salgaldo accused these AD's of being tied to the GU's.   Later he backed away from that assumption.

The current mayor of Teloloapan, a close ally of Marino Miranda, famously appeared in a LFM video two years ago, where he promised to appoint personnel favorable to LFM:

From Proceso:
The body was found in bed, with the head tossed on the floor.  Under the head was a message:

“Esto les va a pasar a todos lo que apoyan a Los Negros, aquí estamos putos”

"This is what is gonna happen to all those who support Los Negros - here we are, fags."

Meanwhile in Afghanistan: Insurgents Kills 33, Wounds 147

9/5/2014

KABUL – Thirty-three people were killed and 147 others wounded in a pre-dawn attack Thursday by Taliban militants on a government compound in eastern Afghanistan, Afghan officials said.

Fighting erupted when the Islamist attackers detonated two vehicles loaded with explosives in the city of Ghazni, capital of the like-named province, the Afghan Interior ministry said in a statement.

Deputy Gov. Mohammad Ahmadi told Efe that the assailants targeted Afghan intelligence headquarters in the three-hour firefight with security forces.

The dead included 10 police officers and all 21 members of the Taliban unit that took part in the assault, while 130 of those wounded in the firefight were civilians and 17 were police officers.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a Twitter post.

Suicide attacks, along with roadside bombs, are the methods most used by the Taliban to attack Afghan and international forces, although numerous civilians figure among the victims.

Afghanistan is going through one of its bloodiest periods since Afghan forces began taking over responsibility for security last year to gradually replace the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, which is to end its mission by the end of 2014.

The Central Asian nation is still in the election process, counting the presidential votes after fraud allegations and a recount that has delayed the naming of the winner.

Despite the withdrawal of the NATO contingent, the United States has announced that it plans to keep 9,800 soldiers in the country until the end of 2016.

Straight-up Lie: Number of Undocumented Immigrants in U.S. Has Remained Stable Since 2009

9/5/2014

WASHINGTON – The number of undocumented immigrants living in the United States has remained stable since the 2007-2009 recession and half of them have lived in this country for at least 13 years, according to a study from the Pew Research Center.

In March 2013, there were 11.3 million undocumented immigrants in this country, according to the report, a number that “has remained stable over the past four years,” Pew research associate Ana Gonzalez-Barrera told Efe on Thursday.

The study says that no significant increase in the number of undocumented migrants is expected in the near future.

The “significant reduction” in arrivals of new immigrants translates into an exaggerated tendency for undocumented workers to become long-term residents and raise families with U.S.-born children.

The immigration debate has been exacerbated with the arrival of 63,000 unaccompanied minors from Central America over the past 10 months.

“Despite the increase in detentions on the border,” the flow of people who are returning voluntarily to their countries of origin has increased, Gonzalez-Barrera said.

Also, the debate on immigration has been revived after President Barack Obama promised in June to “repair the immigration system” with executive orders given the logjam created by Republicans in Congress on the issue.

The percentage of long-term resident immigrants, according to the Pew Center study, which is based on Census data, has increased significantly in recent years, with 62 percent of them arriving more than a decade prior to 2012, compared with 35 percent in 2000.

This could be due, according to Gonzalez-Barrera, to the fact that the construction sector, which attracted the greater part of the short-term immigrants in the past, still has not fully recovered from the recession.

The undocumented immigrants arriving in this country have tended to establish their residence on a permanent basis here, the Pew Center said, and raise families with U.S.-born children. There were four million undocumented immigrant adults with U.S.-born children in 2012, compared with 2.1 million in 2000.

Following The Anti-Oil Money

9/5/2014

The Interconnected World Of Hollywood And Green Money

First, it's important to note the hypocrisy of each major celebrity that has waged a war on Canadian oil and North American energy independence. Leonardo DiCaprio visited the Alberta oil sands near Fort McMurray via plane in a joint tour with the Sierra Club.

Before visiting the oil sands, DiCaprio had to fly from his million dollar mansion in California to Alberta on a private jet powered by gallons of fossil fuel. Mr. Gatsby is a devout environmentalist who has produced documentaries like The 11th Hour and forked over millions to build an eco-friendly resort in Belize. Unfortunately, DiCaprio's private jetcreates an unnecessary excess of carbon waste over top of the daily commercial flights from California to Alberta, all because the superstar refuses to fly with average commoners and peasants.

To top off DiCaprio's larger than average carbon footprint, the actor recently signed up for a space flight with Virgin Galactic.

Both James Cameron and Neil Young have also visited the oil sands via planes and private jets. In fact, Neil Young also used a gasoline powered bus during his last North American tour, while his band used electrical outlets connected to coal and oil power plants.

None of these hypocritical celebrities will admit that fossil fuels help transport food, water, and medical supplies around the world. It's because of fossil fuels that doctors from around the world are able to help contain the Ebola outbreak in Africa. Most of the medical supplies they use also rely on petroleum based materials, like plastic.

If Ebola were to ever find its way across the pond, it would be petroleum technologies that save us from a pandemic.

Something else these celebrities don't understand is that people who support oil production also realize that fossil fuels harm the environment. We get it. Oil is bad, which is why we would all support affordable alternatives. Unfortunately, we haven't arrived at that point in history yet. For now, we still need fossil fuels. When someone finds a truly safe and affordable source of energy, let us know.

Now, lets get to the juicy parts of this war on North America's energy industry.

Nefarious Sources Of Funding

Journalist James O'Keefe recently tricked actors Ed Begley Jr. and Mariel Hemingway into accepting fake Middle Eastern money to help fund an anti-fracking film in Hollywood. Neither Begley or Hemingway knew they were being duped and secretly filmed.

Both actors agreed to hide the fact that their film would be funded by Middle Eastern interests. O'Keefe also captured Hollywood producers explaining methods of hiding the funding, referring to various “non-profit groups” that would help keep Middle Eastern funding under wraps. The full undercover video can be watched right here.

The idea that Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia would invest in such propaganda makes sense. Saudi Arabia is a major oil supplier to both the United States and Canada. They also ship some of their oil to China, where Canada's contentious Northern Gateway pipeline is eventually supposed to ship Canadian bitumen.

Another ominous prospect is Russia. The country just signed a 30 yeargas contract with China. As the United States begins off-shore drilling and various fracking ventures on its own soil, the country poses an economic threat to Russian gas and oil exports. With growing oil production and a Prime Minister scouring the globe for potential buyers, Canada is also becoming a significant industrial threat to Russia and Middle Eastern oil suppliers.

Canada is currently the world's sixth largest oil producer, but over the years Canada has cranked up its production.

The top three oil producers are Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United States. By 2025, it's estimated that Canada could push past Iran into fourth place and eventually into third place – ahead of the United States.

Canadians should consider that Canada has also become a significant economic threat to the United States. Organizations like ForestEthics are indirectly funded by American billionaires like Tom Steyer and receive official support from the Tides Foundation, an organization funded by several international enterprises. ForestEthics is one of the American organizations responsible for tying up the Northern Gateway by filing lawsuitsagainst the National Energy Board and Federal government. Another organization funded by Tides is the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) – but we'll get into that shortly.

ForestEthics claims credit for almost 90% of the “letters of comment” sent to the National Energy Board in opposition to Northern Gateway. The organization's 2012 tax returns from the IRS reveal that 3.3 million US dollars were funnelled into Canada by ForestEthics to oppose Canadian oil production between 2009 and 2012. ForestEthics also takes responsibility for organizing First Nations protests against several Canadian pipelines, including Line 9. The full rundown of ForestEthics' money and influence can be seen in this piece written by Vivian Krause for the Financial Post.

As Vivian Krause reveals, ForestEthics tax returns give us insight into even more powerful connections:

“Since 2008, ForestEthics has been the workhorse of the Tar Sands campaign, co-funded by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Tides Foundation. Tides has dispersed more than $20 million for the Tar Sands campaign, including US$ 1.3 million to ForestEthics. The origin of these funds is not revealed by Tides.”

Tides' refusal to disclose the origins of its donors leaves the door wide open to speculation. Remember that photo of George W. Bush holding hands with a Saudi king? Despite their differences, the United States and Saudi Arabia have been strong energy partners since the 1970s. Both countries are in a constant battle between friendship and feud. In the grand scheme of things, Canada poses a significant threat to this long energy relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia. An important fact to remember is that the Keystone XL pipeline threatens to further reduce America's dependence on Saudi oil.

The energy relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia is complex and requires a delicate balance. There can't be too much oil and gas production in the United States, but there is even less tolerance for the flow of Canadian oil into the United States. The last thing Saudi Arabia wants is Canada providing a new path toward American energy independence.

The Hollywood Connections

The Tides Foundation hosts conferences like the Tides Momentum Conference. Billionaire green activist, Tom Steyer, has been a speaker at the conference. Tom Steyer is a well known American billionaire who has recently made headlines for his attacks on the Alberta oil sands and the Keystone pipeline. Along with being a supporter of Tides, Steyer attends ceremonies and events like the Global Green Millennium Awards, where he meets and mingles with Hollywood big shots and actors like Ed Begley Jr., Fran Drescher and Ed O'Neill (Al Bundy).

Global Green also organizes pre-Oscar parties and events in Hollywood. Global Green's CEO, Matt Petersen, said his pre-Oscar parties allow his organization to “use the spotlight of Hollywood to shine a light on problems, but more importantly, the solutions: drive a clean vehicle. Live green. Vote green.”

Leonardo DiCaprio's 11th Hour featured Matt Petersen and Global Green helped roll out the red carpet for the film's premier.

Matt Petersen is a member of Greeenstar's advisory board, along with Aimee Christensen, who has worked closely with the Rockefeller Brothers Fund as an environmental strategist through her company, Christensen Global Strategies. Between 2006 and 2007, Christensen worked for Google where she developed strategies to deal with global warming and poverty. Both Aimee Christensen and Ed Begley Jr. are on the board of directors for yet another environmental group called ecoAmerica.

Greeenstar (three Es) is dedicated to green living and green energy.

It was founded by Dr. Charles Roberts, who claims that “meeting Leonardo DiCaprio, actor and environmentalist, in 2008, was a turning point” in his mission to save the planet. One of Greeenstar's partners and donors is the Natural Resources Defense Council, the largest environmental organization based in Washington DC. The NRDC touts its legal team of 400 attorneys and credits them and their “courtroom clout” for winning lawsuits against corporations and special interest groups that harm the environment. The NRDC has also teamed up with Green Day to launch a website dedicated to creating awareness of US petroleum dependence.

NRDC is also an official partner and donor of ecoAmerica.

The NRDC is one of the organizations that receives funding from the Tides Foundation. The NRDC is not only funded by Tides, it was initially started as a side project by Tides and received a start-up grant from the Tides Center. To see all of the other groups funded by Tides, click here. To read more about Tides' other projects and offshoots, like the Sierra Club, click here.

All of the major environmental advocacy groups operating in the United States are interconnected.

All of the founders, CEOs, partners and donors of these organizations have – at one point – collaborated or joined forces for various ventures and projects. All of these environmental organizations have directly and indirectly influenced useful idiots in Hollywood, like Leonardo DiCaprio, Ed Begley Jr., Matthew Modine, and Marial Hemingway. None of that would be a big deal if all of these major environmental groups didn't have their roots planted in soil fertilized by Tides money. Unfortunately, all of these groups owe their existence to Tides.

One direct and overt Canadian connection to Tides is Joanie Bronfman, who sits on the Tides board of directors. She is a member of Canada's wealthy Bronfman family. The Bronfmans are often referred to as the Canadian Rockefellers because of their significant wealth, influence and activism.

The Tides Foundation and the Tides Center have weaved a complex web that stretches across North America. The most troubling fact is that a majority of Tides funding can't be directly traced. Most of the donations and funds that go to Tides are filtered through the enterprises and subsidiary groups of various organizations and individual investors. To make its web even more complex and difficult to track is Tides' strategy of creating several projects and advocacy groups with different names, different CEOs and different environmental directives. For good reason, some critics of Tides have referred to the organization as a massive money laundering operation.

Spreading their message and fuelling their fear campaign is at the heart of their agenda. Hollywood is filled with celebrities with star power and producers with money. The Tides foundation has been in business for 35 years and as long as it keeps finding representatives in Hollywood, it will be in business for 35 more – or until it achieves all of its objectives.

Upheaval in Kansas Senate as election official rules Dem can't withdraw

9/5/2014

Greg Nash
Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) has denied Democrat Chad Taylor’s request to be removed from the Kansas Senate ballot.
His Thursday decision means Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) will face three candidates on the ballot this fall — Taylor, independent Greg Orman and libertarian Randall Batson — boosting the vulnerable senator’s reelection prospects.
Now, Taylor could siphon off enough anti-Roberts votes from Orman, who’s been surging in the race and is now seen by Democrats as their best shot to take Roberts down, to deliver the senator an opening for a win.
Kobach told reporters that, after evaluating state election law statutes, his legal team found that Taylor did not meet the law’s requirement to provide sufficient “evidence he would be incapable of fulfilling the duties of office if elected.”
“Short of some sort of injunction or some sort of judicial action barring the state from proceeding, the decision is made,” Kobach said.
Kansas Democrats were up in arms, and Taylor himself said shortly after Kobach announced his decision that he’s going to contest it, noting the fact he was told by an elections official the document he submitted Wednesday was sufficient to remove him from the ballot.
“I am planning to challenge the ruling of the Kansas Secretary of State, who serves on Pat Roberts’ Honorary Committee,” Taylor said in a statement.
Democrats are claiming similar situations have occured in other local races, where a candidate has removed themselves from the ballot without indicating they were unable to serve, have gone unchallenged.
It’s still unclear what a legal challenge would entail, however, or how long they’ll have to file a complaint, but the window appears to be narrowing by the day.
Kobach said Thursday that because military ballots have to be sent out 45 days before the election, and printing takes some time, “everything has to be set by September 18.”
One Democratic operative in the state, Chris Reeves, said he expects some sort of challenge soon.
“Several candidates on down ballot have been released from running and other selections made without the huddling of attorneys to keep someone on the ballot - not just this year, but in prior years,” he said in an email. “If Kobach was to force this issue, we would point out state certification of those changes in 2012 and 2014, and note that this would be uneven enforcement of the law by a different standard.”
Reeves also said the move plays right into Democrats’ hands as they believe it underscores the argument they’ve been making against Kobach.
“If the Republicans challenge [Taylor’s exit], to be honest, it would be the greatest thing imaginable because it would make Kris Kobach look like a partisan hack,” Reeves said.
Kobach is locked in a tight race of his own with Democrat Jean Schodorf, and on Thursday, she said the decision showed Kansans his “partisan nature” and the “lack of leadership” in his office.
“Mr. Kobach does not act with the best intentions of Kansans in mind. He only considers what is best for his personal agenda.  This stands directly against what is best for the people of Kansas,” Schodorf said in a statement.
Kobach's decision could have reverberations for Democrats across the ballot, if they're asked to answer for Taylor's baggage concerning domestic violence and alleged gender discrimination. He's still in the middle of a discrimination suit brought against his office by two former female employees, and he drew heavy criticism for refusing to prosecute domestic violence cases as the Shawnee County district attorney due to, he said, budget cuts.
But Democrats risk their own chances in the race by making so much noise about Kobach’s move. Many Democrats in the state have suggested they’ll back Orman in the race — despite the fact he hasn’t declared who he’d caucus with if the Senate is split 50-50 — since he’s seen as the more competitive candidate against Roberts.
Part of his competetiveness, however, lies in his lack of party affiliation and ability to harness the dissatisfaction voters have expressed with both parties. Being seen as the Democrats’ pick could undermine that appeal.
Leroy Towns, Roberts’s campaign manager, used that line of attack in responding to Taylor’s initial exit from the race, charging it was the result of a “corrupt bargain” between Orman and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).
“It makes clear what has been obvious from the start: Orman is the choice of liberal Democrats and he can no longer hide behind an independent smokescreen,” Towns said in a statement issued Wednesday.
Roberts, however, is not out of the woods just yet, even if Democrats aren’t successful in challenging Kobach’s decision.
Orman’s campaign said they had conducted internal polling in mid-August and found Orman gaining ground and soon surpassing Taylor for second place. They believe there’s an opening for him to win in a four-way race, especially when Roberts’ critics go on air with attacks against him.
Questions concerning where the incumbent actually lives continue to dog him, and he hasn’t helped his case since the primary ended. His campaign manager said Roberts returned “home” — to Virginia — to rest, after the primary, and he hasn’t been on air since the primary, while Orman’s been up near-consistently.
Aware of the difficulty Roberts is facing, national Republicans are already coming to his aid. Veteran GOP strategist Chris LaCivita has signed on as an advisor for his campaign and is headed to Kansas this weekend to begin to help out, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee is working with the Roberts campaign to bolster his operation, planning to send more staff in the coming days and weeks.

BUSTED: Mary Landrieu Lists Washington DC Mansion As Home Address On Voter Registration

9/5/2014

When it comes to running for public office and actually voting on voting day, Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) uses two different addresses.
In order to qualify for the Louisiana Senate race against Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) this November, Landrieu is claiming that she lives with her parents Moon and Verna Landrieu at their large-scale New Orleans bungalow on South Prieur Street. Landrieu has a $2.5 million home in Washington DC with her husband Frank Snellings that the two built together.
But, on her voter registration card, Landrieu lists Washington DC as her primary residence. Take a look at it here:
mary landrieu voting form
Landrieu asserts that she still lives with her parents though, saying “I have lived at my home on Prieur Street most of my life and I live there now, when not fulfilling my duties in Washington or serving constituents across the state.”
In a report by the Washington Post, the Moon and Verna’s neighbors say they haven’t seen Mary in years.
“I don’t think she lives there,” said Fontaine Wells, 65, pointing at the Landrieu home. “She might come visit, but come on now — she lives in D.C. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her.”
Michael Fitzgerald, 61, has lived around the corner from the Landrieus for three decades. He said he sees Moon and Verna Landrieu regularly, as well as Mitch Landrieu, Mary’s younger brother and the city’s current mayor, who lives in a home he owns nearby.
“They’ve been very good neighbors,” Fitzgerald said. “On Election Day, [Mary] is seen at our polling place accompanying her parents.” He added, “I have not seen her lately. . . . She’s been in the Senate for — I’ve lost count — 16 years? 18 years?”
In the years since, the neighborhood has been rebuilt and is now a post-Katrina success story. Moon Landrieu was particularly active in the rebuilding efforts, said Kelli Wright, who has lived in Broadmoor since 1988 and is president of the Broadmoor Improvement Association.
“Is Mary’s address the Landrieu’s family home?” Wright asked. “I don’t know where she lives. I’ve never seen her around the neighborhood. It doesn’t mean she’s not here, but I haven’t seen her. We see Moon, we see Verna, we see the mayor.”
In fact, it would actually be easier for Landrieu to run for office in Washington DC than it would be to run in Louisiana.
