8 year old Socialist, accused of package thefts

Dec. 23, 2012

CLERMONT, Fla., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said an 8-year-old girl accused of stealing packages from the doorsteps of neighbors said she did it on a dare.

Tiffany Baggs, who lives in the Foxchase subdivision of Clermont, said two of the several packages stolen from neighborhood doorsteps belonged to her, so she and across the street neighbor Tim Lebeda set up a camera and decoy boxes to catch the culprit on camera, the Orlando Sentinel reported Friday.

The camera captured the 8-year-old snatching the decoy boxes from Baggs' porch and the footage was handed over to police, who questioned the girl and her mother about the thefts.

The girl initially denied taking the boxes but later admitted she had committed the thefts on a dare from another girl, police said.

The girl has not been charged with a crime.

It was unclear Friday whether the packages had been returned to their owners.
