A babysitter remains behind bars after she was caught shaking the infant, throwing her in a playpen and slapping her face.
McAllen police responded to a call on the 4900 block of west Upas Avenue Tuesday.
The mother of the eight-month-old told police that her live in babysitter, Juana Zavala, was mistreating her daughter.
According to documents obtained by Action 4 News, a witness saw 55-year-old Zavala shake the infant in the home’s master bedroom.
Zavala reportedly held the eighth-month-old from her armpits, facing the baby and shook her body and head.
The witness said he saw Zavala shook the baby so hard, her head bent back and forth.
Zavala then threw the infant into the playpen, causing the baby to bounce and her pacifier to pop out of her mouth.
The 50-year-old babysitter slapped the infant with both of her hands, causing the baby to cry uncontrollably.
Documents stated the witness went into the room and told Zavala she wasn’t treating the baby right.
The witness then picked up the baby, took her to the living room of the home, and put her to sleep.
The baby reportedly suffered red marks on her face from where Zavala slapped her.
Authorities said the mother took her child to a hospital for an examination, and filed criminal charges against Zavala.
A warrant for injury to a child was issued for the 55-year-old.
Zavala remains behind bars on a $7,500.
