Burns Wins GOP Central Caucus Straw Poll

By Keegan Gibson, Managing Editor

Harrisburg – Tim Burns, the Washington County businessman who ran for congress against Mark Critz in 2010, won a bellwether straw poll at the Saturday meeting of the Pa. Republican state committee’s central caucus.

It was a surprisingly good result for Burns and indicates that he is a contender for the endorsement of the state committee as a whole.

The final vote total in the U.S. Senate primary was Burns 32; Sam Rohrer and Steve Welch 22 each; Tom Smith 20; David Christian 2 and Marc Scaringi 1. No other candidates appeared at the meeting, or received any votes.

“I am honored to have such strong support in the Central Caucus,” said Burns in a statement. “I believe the Central Caucus membership and I both share a real concern for the problems facing our nation and our great Commonwealth today.”

Burns told PoliticsPA he’d be “hard pressed” to stay in the race if state committee endorses another candidate.

It’s an important win for Burns, who was left out of this week’s self-funding dual between Smith and Welch (Smith has loaned $5 million to his campaign, Welch has loaned $1 million).

“No one is able to completely fund their own campaign in this race,” Burns said, referring to the primary and general. “You’ve got to be able to raise money.”

Burns said he contributed over $250,000 to his congressional bid and said he’ll show more than that in the Q4 report. He noted that he has had a warm response from the national donors who boosted his congressional run. A Burns spokesperson said the campaign would release its fourth quarter numbers in the coming week; the filing deadline is Jan. 31.

The caucus meeting itself, in which each candidate delivered 5 minute introductory remarks and took questions for 5 minutes, was closed to the press. But the hallway outside the meeting room in the Harrisburg Hilton was crowded with politicos as candidates for Senate, Attorney General, Auditor General and Treasurer spoke with state committee members. At one point it appeared that there were over 30 full-time operatives and staffers for the 12 candidates present.

The 100 or so committee members and proxies debated the candidates’ merits and flaws, but almost universally agreed that electability was the top priority. Many said they thought, for the first time in a long time, there was a significant chance that the party would opt not to endorse in the primary.

Others said they want an endorsement knowing it won’t empty the field, but hoping it will narrow it.

“Probably there’ll be an endorsement,” speculated PA Republican Party Chairman Rob Gleason, but said that there isn’t a front runner.

He said he wasn’t necessarily banking on the winner of the self-funding race.

“It doesn’t matter how much money they’ve raised,” Gleason said. Committee members are “looking at their ability to defeat Bob Casey.”

Each of the top four candidates was pleased with his performance, and by an large committee members agreed.

Comments were spirited and positive, said Franklin County Chairman Dwight Weidman, who cast his vote and four proxies for Smith.

Sam Rohrer

Rohrer was practically shut out of that 2010 endorsement process when he challenged front runner Tom Corbett for the gubernatorial nomination, and campaigned heavily against the establishment.

He had a softer tone this time around.

“Over the past weeks I’ve been talking to state committee members, to show the respect I have for them and this process,” Rohrer said. His come county of Berks falls within the central caucus.

He hosted a reception for those members on Friday night, but he said he’d run regardless.

“Our commitment is for the long haul.”

As for fundraising, Rohrer is at a real disadvantage in a primary against three millionaires. His campaign anticipates bringing in something in the neighborhood of $120,000 for Q4. He said he isn’t discouraged and will continue to tap the network of grassroots supporters he built in 2010.

“It’s more difficult to find 10,000 donors who believe in you than to find one person who can bankroll their own race,” he said. Campaign manager Zac Moyle added that Rohrer has had productive meetings with several of the key conservative fundraising groups in Pa. and Washington DC, including those with a record of picking horses in U.S. Senate primaries.

Steve Welch

Welch has been working as hard as anyone in the primary race; he said he’s visited 44 counties, driven over 10,000 miles so far, and attended every forum and public event in the primary. He said will hit all 67 Pa. counties by the end of January.

Though not essential, a state committee endorsement is an important part of his campaign’s victory equation. He was the first candidate to schedule a Friday night hospitality event for committee members.

Correspondingly, Welch said he would respect the endorsement process if it was “organic,” meaning one in which members have the ability to vote they way they want.

“I think it would be arrogant to think that they [state committee members] don’t know what they’re doing,” Welch said. “As long as it’s an organic process, I would respect that.”

“It’s not about Steve Welch or any other candidate,” Welch said. “It’s about defeating Bob Casey in November.”

Tom Smith

A state committee endorsement isn’t crucial for the former coal company owner and former Tea Party leader from Armstrong County. His campaign’s ideal scenario is an open primary, where Smith’s significant resources wouldn’t have to compete with those of the state party.

“I will still run,” if the state committee endorses another candidate, Smith said. “Too many people are committed to this campaign.”

“If they endorse, fine. If they don’t endorse, fine,” he said.

Several of his staffers and consultants, who consider the primary a two-man race between Smith and Welch, claimed victory in the fact that Welch did not emerge from the meeting with front runner status.

Marc Scaringi

Several committee members Scaringi gave one of, if not the best speech of the Senate candidates, but his inability to raise significant financial resources proved a deal breaker.

“Money isn’t everything, but it’s something,” said one committee person.

“Today’s straw poll result was not a surprise,” responded spokesman Randy DeSoto, noting that Scaringi has won several post-forum straw polls. “Marc has been calling for an open primary and pledged to continue running, even if he does not get the endorsement.”

At 117 members, the central region is the largest of the state committee’s caucuses and among the most diverse – stretching from Bedford County to Lancaster, and north to the New York border.

Saturday’s caucus meeting represents the first in a statewide series. Next weekend, the candidates will travel to northeast Pa. and the Lehigh Valley; after that, southwest and northwest Pa.; then southeast Pa.; and finally state committee endorsement meeting on January 28.

The Mental Derangement of Ron Paul’s Campaign

Posted by Erick Erickson (Diary)
Saturday, January 7th at 5:50PM EST

Supporters of Ron Paul produced a hit job on Jon Huntsman attacking Huntsman over his adopted daughter. His daughter, ftom China, was left for dead in a market and the Huntsmans intervened, got her back to good health, and adopted her.

Someone put up a video attacking Huntsman adoption as proof that Huntsman is a foreign agent.

The video began circulating among Ron Paul supporters and when Huntsman called them out, the Ron Paul campaign swung into high gear and produced a report that I can only venture to suspect was written by someone hopped up on gardasil, having acquired the mental retardation Michele Bachmann warned us about.

The Ron Paul campaign — NOT SUPPORTERS, BUT CAMPAIGN — analysis concludes that Jon Huntsman attacked his own daughter in an attempt to smear Ron Paul.

Yes, friends, it has come to that level of dain bramage.

While the media is licking its chops over the he said – he said of the Ron Paul “analysis” I should note that ridicule of the families of the other candidates is par for the course for Ron Paul supporters.

Here’s a Paul supporter on Ron Paul’s wall on Facebook ridiculing Rick Santorum’s family:

The Paul campaign could have had the common decency to just say it was a supporter and condemn the attack on Jon Huntsman and his daughter.

But the Paul campaign seems only willing to condemn black people, Jews, and gays. Everyone else is fair game, including the children of other Presidential candidates.

What’s even more disturbing though is the Politico and other news outlets treating the Ron Paul defense as legitimate and questioning the Huntsman campaign. That’s not something the media even did to John McCain in 2000 with the awful attacks on him in South Carolina.

Pitiful all around.

Right-to-Work Law Advances in Indiana; House Dems Again No-Shows

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A Republican-dominated Indiana Senate committee endorsed the right-to-work bill that has prompted a three-day standstill in the Indiana House.

The Senate labor committee voted 6-4 to send the bill to the full Senate, where the GOP holds a 37-13 majority and the party’s leader has made its passage a top priority. The bill would prohibit contracts between companies and unions that require workers to pay representation fees.

Minutes after that vote, the House again was unable to convene as most Democrats stayed away in protest of the proposal.

Even Obama Agrees that the Senate Was Not in Recess

Defenders of President Obama’s unprecedented “recess” appointments of Richard Cordray to the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and three members to the National Labor Relations Board argue that the Constitution is vague on when Congress is in session and that the President can therefore take a “functionalist” approach that considers whether the Senate is available to vote on nominations.

Yet even the President doesn’t buy that argument.

Meanwhile WordPress claims CAIR had nothing to do with the site being shut down. The BNI site will now be up until January 6, 2012.

Join us as we talk with Bonni and get the story straight from the source. Representatives from WordPress and CAIR are invited to call in as well.

Welcome to The Radio Jihad Show with your hosts Vito Esposito and Al.

The name of our show and network, Radio Jihad, is a purposeful play on words focusing on the very serious topic of America's national security from the threat of Codified Islamic Political Doctrine.

The Radio Jihad Show is our "Jihad" to educate Americans on the true nature of Islamic Political Jihad.

Codified Islamic texts, Umdat al Salik, defines Jihad this way: "Jihad means to war against non-Muslims, and is etymologically derived from the word mujahada, signifying warfare to establish the religion." Muslim advocacy groups here in the United States are deceiving the American people on what the true meaning of "Jihad"

Why would Muslims in America lie to the non-Muslim majority as to the true meaning of Jihad or Islamic Warfare against non-Muslims?

Now that you have the facts on Jihad, the Source material for our conclusion, you now have the obligation to educate all those within your sphere of influence.

Good luck in the race ahead. May the very best pro-life, pro-family, small government, big defense conservative be our candidate! Will be wonderful to have a candidate we can enthusiastically support for a change.

My latest Townhall column is called, The 10 Biggest Political Debacles of 2011. Here’s an excerpt from the column.

Obama finds his foil in bid for 4 more years: Congress; President puts his agenda in the House on hold in a new, go-it-alone approach

President Barack Obama is heading into his re-election campaign with plans to step up his offensive against an unpopular Congress, concluding that he cannot pass any major legislation in 2012 because of Republican hostility toward his agenda.

Iowa Democrats re-examine choice

ATLANTIC, Iowa - Terry Mathisen's face tightened at the name. "Barack Obama," he said, shaking his head on his way out of a coffee shop in this outpost 80 miles west of Des Moines.

Newt Gingrich's campaign bus pulled out of town a few minutes earlier, and Mathisen, 61, could have easily blended in with the crowd of Republicans who showed up to see the candidate at a Coca-Cola bottling plant.

Mathisen, though, is a Democrat and supported Obama in 2008.

"I just wish I hadn't have done it," he lamented Saturday, explaining.....

Iraq Is Destabilized In Wake Of Pullout

With President Obama appeasing his liberal base by completing a full pullout of U.S. troops from Iraq this month, the public is decidedly glum about the future of the country Americans spent so much blood and money liberating.

Republicans across Iowa are bracing for trouble on Tuesday, concerned that caucus sites will be the next stop for the Occupy protesters who've staged demonstrations and disruptions at election events across the state.

Romney, Santorum gain momentum down stretch in Iowa

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Mitt Romney was all business, Rick Santorum was all smiles and Newt Gingrich pleaded for Iowans to punish negative ads as they fanned out across Iowa on Sunday searching for late momentum ahead of Tuesday’s caucuses.

Obama signed defense act - now what?

The National Defense Authorization Act greatly expands the power and scope of the federal government to fight the War on Terror, including codifying into law the indefinite detention of terrorism suspects without trial. Under the new law the US military has the power to carry out domestic anti-terrorism operations on US soil.

Incomes have dropped 6.7% during Obama 'recovery'

New evidence suggests there’s a reason why this economic “recovery” hasn’t felt much like a recovery. Figures from the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey, compiled by Sentier Research, show that the “recovery” has actually been harder on most Americans than the recession from which they’ve allegedly been recovering.

How About Santorum?

How About Santorum

Fox claims that Romney holds a small lead in the polls over Paul and Santorum in Iowa. I don't like Romney because of Romneycare. I don't like Paul because his foreign policy of complete disengagement is looney, in my opinion.

What do you think about Santorum? The Conservative Lady likes him. Maybe he is a good candidate.

And Just A Conservative Girl pointed out that Bachmann even said he would make a good Attorney General or VP if she is made President. That is high praise.

The man who wouldn't take "no" for an answer

The Republican primary is interesting, in that the supposed front runner (Mitt Romney) can't seem to break past 25% support in the polls. There have been a lot of challengers - Perry, Cain, Gingrich - and all have faded. When that happens, you'd expect Romney's support to tick up a couple points. After 3 or 4 times, he should have picked up 10-15% more support. So where is he?
The Des Moines Register poll, in an unusual announcement, revealed that Santorum was much stronger in interviews that were conducted on the final two days of the four-day survey period than in the first two days. Santorum placed second to Romney in that later period. The overall results were Romney at 24%, Paul at 22%, and Santorum at 15%. But in the final two days, Romney was at 24%, Paul was down to 18%, and Santorum was at 21%.

The legacy media is trying to blame the GOP for the fiscal mess in Washington.

Need proof? Simple: Obama failed to pass a budget in 2009 and 2010 when the Congress was COMPLETELY CONTROLLED by his own party and run by Read and Pelosi.

Then he failed to get behind the BI-PARTISAN Simpson-Bowles Commission plan - throwing the commission HE FREAKING APPOINTED under the bus.

Whenever the GOP is attacked for the debt-ceiling fiasco or fights over continuing resolutions needed in the absence of a budget they should bring this up.

Obama's leadership record on budgetary issues and the debt is HORRIFIC.

No rational person can blame the current political stalemate on the GOP; (though the legacy media is trying.)

Senate’s Most Anti-gun Republican Member Vulnerable in Primary

Washington, DC --( Happy New Year from all of us at Gun Owners of America

And we would also like to extend best wishes to Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who is challenging anti-gun Senator Richard Lugar in next year’s Republican primary.

Dick Lugar is without a doubt the most anti-gun Republican in the U.S. Senate.

He voted in favor of President Obama’s two picks for the Supreme Court -- Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan – who deny the existence of an individual right to bear arms.
Lugar voted against repealing the gun bans in national parks and in Washington D.C.
He voted in favor of waiting periods for handgun purchases and he supports banning many semi-automatic firearms.
And Lugar was the only Republican Senator to refuse to sign a letter opposing a massive UN small arms treaty.

As you can imagine, Dick Lugar is one of the anti-gunners’ best friends in the Senate. READ MORE

Ron Paul’s Soros Defense Plan

It was recently observed that Ron Paul was to the left of Obama on national security and the best evidence for that statement can be found when one year ago Ron Paul joined forces with Barney Frank on a proposal to gut national defense via a panel of experts, quite a few of whom were tied to George Soros.

Armed Victims 9 - Armed Robbers and Burglars 0

There’s several well known anti-firearms rights groups that highlight the number of children shot by guns in its anti-gun rights messages. But, there’s the fact that many of that number of those "children" use guns to commit crimes and got themselves shot or killed. Its undeniable that lumped into that group of “children” in a misleading way are those criminal teenagers who are counted as “children," age 13 to 19, in their statistics when they are shot. Many of those “children” are gangbangers or other assorted teenage criminals who do their criminal business with guns just as their adult criminal counterparts who also use guns in the course of their violent crimes do. The teens take their chances in getting hurt or shot in the commission of crimes just as adult do.

One of those “children” sure to be added to their statistics is the 18 year old “child” in...

The Genocide Doctrine

Whether or not Ron Paul actually said that he would not intervene to stop the Holocaust, there is nothing particularly extraordinary about this position. The United States has never intervened to stop a genocide. Not in WW2 and not since when several genocides have taken place, most notably in Africa, without any military intervention.

Protesters hold signs near Obama vacation rental

By Star-Advertiser staff
POSTED: 04:00 p.m. HST, Dec 31, 2011
LAST UPDATED: 04:49 p.m. HST, Dec 31, 2011

About 20 people gathered this morning outside the security entrance to President Barack Obama’s vacation compound in Kailua to condemn U.S. wars, occupations, and torture.

The gathering was organized by a local faction of World Can’t Wait, a national activist group against alleged crimes by the U.S. government.

Protestors held up signs for a variety of issues, from supporting Wikileaks to ending U.S. support for Israel. Some motorists honked in support, while a few showed their opposition with hand gestures or shouting out the window.

Police officers in aloha shirts with the Civil Affairs Division monitored the two-hour protest, which ended at noon. Protestors and police said there were no problems.

Liz Rees, a World Can’t Wait organizer, said the group wanted to focus on torture because Obama has not kept his campaign promise to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay. She said the group never saw Obama during the protest, but they were able to share their message with members of the public.

“I think it’s important (to raise attention about the issues) wherever the president is, even though he’s on vacation,” she said. “These are serious issues.”

Robert Stiver, 68, of Pearl City, carried a handwritten sign that said, “Stop enabling zionist Israel’s genocidal oppression of the Palestinians.”

He said he has opposed U.S. support of Israel since taking Arabic language and culture courses as a young man in the Army.

The Fear and Self-loathing of Liberals

Posted on Monday January 02, 02:49:29 GMT-0500 2012 by Crucial

I've often pondered what makes a liberal, a liberal. They tend to do so much damage throughout history and are incredibly difficult to defeat. Figuring out what makes them tick would seem to be priority number one. As I thought about it recently I came to a revelation that others have discovered but never fleshed out to my satisfaction. That revelation is that liberals fear and loathe their own humanity. Liberals loathe their own humanity because well, being human means being naturally flawed or seemingly so. I personally think that if we weren't flawed there wouldn't be any real challenges in life in exceling beyond our limitations.

Liberals apparently can't handle these innate flaws that come with being human and deep down that hurts their pride. They are mortified when they look inward, when they feel racially insecure, or think a sexist thought or feel a need to be greedy. They loathe themselves because of these all too human feelings and because of their shame they feel they must stamp them out and control them in others. They have to feel like they are above their human emotions so they can feel worthy of praise. Liberals fear being judged on their natural feelings.

Liberals don't understand that regardless of the past, that they are no better than their ancestors deep down, that controlling ones negative tendencies gives one character and strength. Ignoring that we are flawed and taking away others' choice to control their own bad behavior leads to a society that lacks self-control and builds resentment and actually encourages bad behavior.

This bad behavior originates because of this lack of self-control and because the aura of "holy purpose" liberals give to their crusades. One need only accuse someone of not being a convert the the liberals' "religion" of political correctness and you risk ostricism in various spheres of life. And so the free-thinking man or woman, where all innovation springs is handcuffed and gagged. Scientific and economic advancement stagnate as a result.

This need to control and regulate, however, leads to a type of totalitarianism that more cynical people would harness to enrich themselves in both wealth and power just for that purpose. Totalitarianism is begun by the well-meaning liberal and then they, being unsophisticated in human nature because they won't look inward, are then manipulated by the more cynical and ambitious among us. This is how freedom ends. I think it's happening now.

Rick Santorum seen as diligent, dedicated (part 6 in a series)

A drubbing on election night five years ago still haunts Rick Santorum’s bid for the presidency.

But relentless campaigning in all 99 Iowa counties and several key endorsements from social conservative leaders signal the Pennyslvania Republican has the potential to make a respectable showing in the 2012 Iowa caucuses.

Santorum shocked the experts in Pennsylvania in 1990 when the brash 32-year-old political novice unseated seven-term incumbent Democrat Doug Walgren for a U.S. House seat.

He proved it was no fluke when he won two years later in a newly drawn district. Then he was elected twice to the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania, considered a swing state..... Read More

Santorum's closing argument on Iowa TV

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) - With three days to go until the Iowa caucuses, Rick Santorum's campaign is going up with a new TV commercial which says the former senator from Pennsylvania is the most qualified Republican presidential candidate to take on President Barack Obama.

The Santorum campaign says the ad starts running statewide in Iowa on Saturday. A top Santorum aide tells CNN the 30-second spot , which will be accompanied by radio commercials and direct mail, is the campaign's closing ad in the Hawkeye State and will run through Tuesday's caucuses, which kick off the primary and caucus calendar.

"Who has the best chance to beat Obama? Rick Santorum. A full-spectrum conservative, Rick Santorum is rock-solid on values issues. A favorite of the tea party for fighting corruption and taxpayer abuse. More foreign policy credentials than any candidate," says the commercial's narrator....

A new problem for Santorum in Iowa: Overcrowding

PELLA, Iowa - Rick Santorum encountered a problem here Saturday afternoon that his campaign was not experiencing as recently as a week ago: overcrowding.

With momentum apparently building for the former Pennsylvania senator, a crowd of well over 100 filled a room at the library in this city of 10,000 to overflowing. After some concerned conversations among local supporters about people perhaps being turned away, the event was moved outside amid uncharacteristically mild temperatures....

10 Things Our Kids Will Never Worry About Thanks to the Information Revolution

You know you’re getting old when you start using the same sort of “kids these days” rants with your children that your parents threw your way long ago.

I caught myself doing this recently when I was lecturing my kids about how lucky they were to not have to get off their duffs every time they wanted to change the channel on TV. I had to explain to them how, back in those Non-Digital Dark Ages of the 1970s, their Grandpa used me as his remote control. I also lamented to my kids that we only had 4 or 5 channels “on the dial” from which to choose in the Chicagoland area. It was at that point my daughter asked me what “on the dial” meant............... (continued)

Twitter's 15 Major Milestones in 2011

Much like any other year, 2011 experienced major events that shook the world, whether the Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East or the worldwide protests led by Occupy Wall Street.

But in 2011, microblogging service Twitter was at the epicenter of these events, broadcasting minute-to-minute updates and firsthand experiences from users to the rest of the world.

For protesters, Twitter served as a primary communicator to connect with other protesters and civilians, organize meetings and post pictures and videos of uprisings. Unfortunately, hundreds of protesters who encouraged violence via social media, or who were photographed and filmed taking part in the violence, were prosecuted.

Check out the gallery to see more of Twitter’s major milestones in 2011.

Margaret Thatcher Debunks the Leftist Agenda on Income Equality

The statists are making a big issue out of income inequality, hoping to convince ordinary Americans that redistribution is their only hope for a better life.

I’ve explained with a pizza analogy that this is horribly misguided because it falsely assumes the economy is a fixed pie.

Simply stated, it doesn’t make sense – or help anybody – if inequality is reduced by policies that hurt everyone, but happen to hurt upper-income people more than lower-income people.

Moreover, redistribution tends to create a “poverty trap” as people get seduced by dependency.

That’s why I’ve argued that economic growth is the best way of helping the less fortunate.

But I have to admit that Margaret Thatcher does a much better job of eviscerating the left’s agenda on this issue..... MORE HERE

Top 10 Worst Federal Rules of 2011

Hindsight is supposed to be 20/20, but looking back on the past 12 months, it’s tough to see any sense in many of the Administration’s regulatory missteps. Of course, there are bound to be a few howlers when government churns out more than 3,500 rules in a year, including dozens unleashed by Obamacare, Dodd–Frank, and the perpetually errant Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). But by any standard, 2011 brought forth a remarkable number and variety of regulatory blunders.

Fair warning: Our Top 10 list may prove fatal to any bit of faith in government as a “fixer,” if faith somehow has managed to survive despite all evidence to the contrary. In any event, it should steel our resolve to fight the Leviathan in the coming year......

Paul: Hamas was created by Israel

Not long ago, Newt Gingrich got into some trouble for claiming that the Palestinians are an “invented people,” although there is some basis for that statement, as prior to the British Mandate there was no such official designation for “Palestine” — and the British clearly included present-day Jordan as a major part of “Palestine” in the mandate. Another Republican candidate offered a history lesson on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in 2009, a moment recalled by Jeff Dunetz in this clip from the House floor. In it, we discover that Israel “started” Hamas as a counterweight to Yasser Arafat, or something, and manages to blame the CIA for radicalizing Muslims and the US for supplying weapons and funds that “kill Palestinians”:

10 Fun Facts You May Not Have Known About Ron Paul

He knows how crazy his conspiracy theories about The Illuminatis are, so he initially deflects the question ("What do you think the Bildersbergers are doing?") with an empty demurral. Then the questioner asks it a second and third time, and he can no longer counterfeit his beliefs; he offers up the Illuminatis conspiracy.

Remember, we're fighting a "phony war" against Al Qaeda, and it's all ginned-up neocon nonsense that Iran is cooking up a nuclear bomb, and Hamas was created by Israel.

The Welfare State's War on Religious Liberty

The case for limited government is becoming increasingly inseparable from the case for religious liberty. Yesterday, the New York Times published a lengthy article on the battle between the Catholic Church and various arms of the leviathan welfare state. The church is battling Obama administration requirements that Catholic schools and hospitals cover contraceptives in their health plans, battling Obama administration decisions to freeze Catholics out of contracts to aid sex-trafficking victims, and battling the state of Illinois over state requirements that Catholic charities place kids with same-sex couples. These fights come after the Catholic church famously shut down its adoption services in Massachusetts rather than bow to state demands that it place children in same-sex households. The Times sets ups the battle for religious liberty as a matter of right of access to government contracts:

obama's policies 'fair' or 'poor'

None of the 36 economists polled rated his performance as 'excellent'

President Barack Obama gets mediocre marks for his handling of the US economy, and Mitt Romney easily outpolls his Republican rivals, an Associated Press survey of economists found.

The economy, and who bears responsibility for it, is likely to be a decisive issue when voters to go the polls next November.

The White House Scandals See-No-Evil Deniers Ignore

With 2011 drawing to a close, it is time to account. As an early-and-often chronicler of Chicago-on-the-Potomac, I am amazed at the stubborn and clingy persistence of President Barack Obama's snowblowers in the media. See no scandal, hear no scandal, speak no scandal.

Dartmouth College professor Brendan Nyhan asserted in May -- while Operation Fast and Furious subpoenas were flying on Capitol Hill -- that "one of the least remarked upon aspects of the Obama presidency has been the lack of scandals."

Conveniently, he defines scandal as a "widespread elite perception of wrongdoing."

The String-Pullers - Channeling TR, President Obama advocates rule-by-elites

Barack Obama initially ran for president invoking Abraham Lincoln, then looked to Franklin D. Roosevelt and even appealed to Ronald Reagan. He began campaigning for reelection as Harry Truman running against a "do nothing" Congress. But now, at long last, he has revealed that his heart truly lies with the old Bull Moose progressive, Theodore Roosevelt.

In a pilgrimage to the small town of Osawatomie, Kan., President Obama has given the defining address of his administration. Osawatomie is where Teddy Roosevelt in 1910 delivered his famous speech calling for a "New Nationalism" and launching his campaign for a third presidential term, which ultimately led him to bolt from the Republicans and run as the Progressive-party candidate.

Osawatomie was Roosevelt at his most progressive, and so it was for Mr. Obama.....

The right Republican

Although the presidency is theirs for the taking, America's Republicans are in danger of throwing it away

IN JANUARY the battle to become the world's most powerful person begins—with small groups of Iowans "caucusing" to choose a Republican nominee for the White House. It is a great opportunity for them. Barack Obama is clearly beatable. No president since Franklin Roosevelt has been re-elected with unemployment as high as it is now; Mr Obama's approval rating, which tends to translate accurately into vote-share, is down in the mid-40s. Swing states like Florida, Ohio and even Pennsylvania look well within the Republicans' grasp.

Yet recent polls show.....

Iran test-fires missiles in key oil waterway

Tehran said it will test-fire missiles in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, a move likely to stoke tensions with Washington already running high over Iran's threats to close the strategic oil waterway if sanctions are enforced.
