Houston, long known for smog, could be in trouble with federal regulators soon for another type of air pollution, one that may be more harmful than ozone.
The Environmental Protection Agency on Friday proposed stricter limits for tiny particles commonly known as soot, that could hit Harris County for the first time. The new standards could require cleaner refineries, factories and operations along the Ship Channel if the area is found out of compliance, as it is for smog, or ozone.
