York teachers protest plan to switch district to all charter schools
School board expected to get final financial recovery plan next month

Discussions continued Wednesday night about York schools financial problems and a plan that could cost teachers their jobs, and teachers did not go quietly outside William Penn High School.

The meeting was the latest in a series where a switch to all charter schools has been discussed to get the district out of debt. But it's the first where teachers protested.

"Save our schools," was chanted by district teachers for about an hour.

Teachers said they would lose their jobs if the district goes to all charter schools. Many are willing to take as much as a 10 percent pay cut to help shore up the $19 million deficit.

District teachers said they already have the right tools and the right ideas to get the district out of debt.

"I think the fix i$ more help from the $tate and more over$ight on the charter schools that have absolutely more accountability," said York High School coach Troy Sowers.

"Rather than bring in strangers that don't know our kids, don't have a history here and to provide inconsistent education, just doesn't seem like that would be the way to go," said Kim Schwarz, of the York Education Association.

Some teachers also sent a plea to Gov. Tom Corbett to increase state funds to inner city schools. One teacher protesting said he found the amount the state gives the York City school district to be unfair and considers it a civil rights issue.

Right now, there is no set recovery plan for York City schools. A final plan is expected to be presented to the school board sometime next month.

Recovery plan consultants said in an all-charter school plan, existing teachers could possibly be rehired.
