Local police officer asked to register as sex offender

CHINA GROVE, Texas - Authorities say a man joined the police officer despite being a convicted sex offender.

Just over a week ago, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office issued a warrant for China Grove Police Officer Daniel Casas, 48, after discovering he was a convicted sex offender who had not ever registered as such with the state.

Casas turned himself in, and was then was but authorities say he still has not registered.

This is disturbing news to residents living in the small town who realize he's been on the force for years, even after being convicted of indecency with a child by contact back in 1991. The victim was a 7-year-old girl he knew.

Zack Lara said, “The only question I have is how is he still a police officer if he's a sex offender? Especially if officers like him are in our community and guarding our children.”

Casas attorney, the mayor and police chief have not returned our phone calls. Bexar County Sheriff's officials say they will not back down until Casas registers as a sex offender.
