CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A former union official who pleaded guilty last year to mail fraud in connection with an alleged conspiracy to embezzle $120,000 on an unauthorized bank loan asked a federal judge Monday to throw out the conviction and order an investigation into “questionable tactics” of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Jonathan Steven Deutsch, the former executive secretary of the Constructors’ Laborers Council of West Virginia, wrote a letter to U.S. District Judge Thomas E. Johnston on Friday, asking the judge to set aside his May 13 plea to one count of mail fraud and dismiss the remainder of a 32-count indictment.
Deutsch also requested that the judge appoint an independent investigator to look into his allegation that prosecutors were “making it up as they went along.”
