WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (CBS Charlotte) – Members of the Ku Klux Klan have reportedly been sending out letters soliciting new membership to West Ashley’s Pierpont neighborhood.
Several people have handed the letters in to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office to alert authorities as to the unwanted notices – including one black girl.
The Post and Courier is reporting that the county sheriff, Maj. Jim Brady, said distribution of the fliers is not an illegal action in and of itself, but that they are retaining the notices as evidence all the same.
Thomas Arthur Robb, national director of the KKK, said that, while the fliers did not officially come from his national office, members do take the time to recruit others of their own volition.
“If a black person got it, it’s just an accident,” Robb told the Post and Courier about the black girl who received the letter. “We’re not trying to recruit blacks.”
