Santorum petition urges Congress to protect Second Amendment from Obama proposals

March 8, 2013

Pennsylvania's former U.S. Sen. and failed 2012 Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum Thursday launched a petition against gun control measures advocated by President Barack Obama.

The petition quickly earned about 500 signatures in its first half hour, according to the website where signators are asked to add their names.

Santorum, a devout social conservative, acknowledged the grief felt across the nation after the Sandy Hook school shooting, but warned that Obama's efforts – led by Vice President and Scranton native Joe Biden – are manipulating the nation's grief to advance a liberal agenda.

“Sadly, President Obama and liberals in Washington are using this tragedy as a way to further their gun control agenda and infringe upon our Second Amendment rights,” he said in a statement.

Santorum said he was most concerned that the proposed mandatory background check for all gun purchases would amount to the creation of a national gun owner registry.

“We can't wait another day to let Congress know that Americans are united in the protection of our Second Amendment rights and against 'universal background checks,” he said.
