MARYVILLE (WATE) - Several workers for Maryville-based restaurant chain Ruby Tuesday were laid off Wednesday, according to one of the workers.
The worker, whom 6 News is not identifying, says the layoffs are difficult this close to the holiday season.
Sources tell 6 News 16 people were laid off Wednesday, mostly from Ruby Tuesday's IT department.
People were seen leaving the support center with boxes late Wednesday afternoon.
Ruby Tuesday has not yet responded to multiple email and telephone requests for comment.
The Maryville Police Department provided security as the workers left their jobs this morning. Chief Tony Crisp says the department sent two officers, one to the main support center on Church Avenue, and another to the Broadway Avenue building.
Officials say they followed the same protocol during layoffs in November.
Meanwhile, the company issued a press statement Wednesday denying recent media reports that it had hired Goldman Sachs to evaluate strategic alternatives.
The company said while it's not their practice to respond to rumors, they believe it's important to clarify that the rumor did not originate with Ruby Tuesday.
They say they are committed to their previously disclosed strategic plans and remain confident in their brand transformation strategy.
An article that appeared Tuesday on financial news website Debtwire said the restaurant chain was working with Goldman Sachs to explore strategic alternatives and that Ruby Tuesday management was expected to seek a buyout.
