Woman tried to use Charro Days as cover to smuggle drugs
A Matamoros woman is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after she allegedly tried to use the Charro Days parade as a cover to smuggle more than $900,000 worth of cocaine into the United States.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested 23-year-old Jessica Treviño-Aguilar on federal drug charges on Saturday.
CBP officers reported that Treviño-Aguilar drove up from Mexico at Brownsville's Gateway International Bridge in a 2012 Honda Civic EX.
Customs officers sent her car to secondary inspection where they allegedly found 12 packages with 28.7 pounds of cocaine worth $918,000 dollars.
Treviño-Aguilar appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan in Brownsville on Monday where she was denied bond until a Thursdsay afternoon hearing.
CBP Port of Brownsville Director Michael Freeman said in a statement the Matamoros woman tried to smuggle the drugs amid the Charro Days festivities on Saturday.
“This alleged smuggler attempted to take advantage of the heavy traffic during the local Charro Days parades," Freeman said in the statement. "This load of dangerous drugs will not reach the streets of our communities thanks to the great work by our CBP officers. I applaud our officers for the outstanding work they do to protect our country."
