NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Prosecutors are pressing for a stiff sentence as former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin prepares to learn how much time he will serve for convictions on charges of bribery, money laundering and other crimes.
Nagin's sentencing hearing before U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan is set for Wednesday morning.
Nagin was convicted on Feb. 12 of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars from businessmen who wanted work from the city or Nagin's support for projects — both before and after Hurricane Katrina. The bribes came in the form of money, free vacation trips and truckloads of free granite for the mayor's family business.
The 58-year-old Democrat defiantly denied any wrongdoing at his trial. It's unclear whether he will speak Wednesday when he appears with defense attorney Robert Jenkins.
