Paul Ryan: “I Don’t Consult Polls To Tell Me What My Principles Are”

On Meet The Press today, a week after Newt Gingrich’s now infamous comments about Medicare reform on that program, Rep. Paul Ryan had a bit of a showdown with host David Gregory. Gregory insisted that Rep. Paul Ryan has no political consensus for his proposed budget and entitlement reforms.
Ryan counted by saying that leaders are elected to lead, not do whatever the latest opinion poll indicates might be popular.
Gingrich, when challenged by Gregory to defend Ryan’s budget and Medicare reforms, tried to distance himself from the proposals and pander to the hostile liberal media and their polls. Ryan, on the other hand, stands on principle.
Ryan’s budget and reforms are far from perfect – indeed they don’t balance the budget any time in the next generation – but they’re the most serious proposal on the table.
