Residents warned to remove cancer fundraising signs from neighborhood (SC)

4/10/2014

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - A form of healing for Goose Creek's Bridgett Sullivan is now at the center of a growing controversy.

Sullivan is the team captain for Sully's Angels, a fundraising effort that involves placing a flock of flamingos in someone's yard, along with a sign that reads, "You've been flocked."

The recipient is chosen to receive the flock by a family member or friend, but can pay to have them removed or pay to send them to someone else in support of the American Cancer Society.

It's a program she started in 2010, in honor of her father, who died of cancer.  Last year, the group raised $7000.

Sullivan said in years of spearheading the fundraiser, she has never run into an issue with a neighborhood association, until now.

"That's the last thing our intention was for somebody to get a violation for this," she said.

Barbara Richardson, a resident of Goose Creek's Crowfield Plantation, received a warning letter in reference to her flock. The flamingos were gone at the time the notice was issued, but the letter included a picture of the flock that sat there days before.

She says a repeat offense would warrant a $100 fine.

"You have a homeowners association so that your neighbors, you hope, will keep up their yards, and they won't let your property value depreciate," she said.

"How does this break any of those rules?"

Live 5 News spoke with the manager of the Crowfield Plantation Homeowner's Association, who declined to comment.  In an email shared by fundraising captain Bridgett Sullivan, the association said the issue was not with the flamingos, but the Sully's Angels sign.

Crowfield Plantation resident Barbara Richardson compared the fundraising effort to an election sign that sat in her yard for three weeks.

"No citation for that. It was the same exact size."

"Your common sense should guide you in everything to do the right thing," Richardson said.  "This was not the right thing."
