DNA evidence is being credited for linking a McAllen man to the sexual abuse of a teenage girl that took place more than five years ago.
McAllen police booked Gonzalo Armando Valadez into the Hidalgo County Jail on Friday afternoon.
The 24-year-old man is accused of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Court records released to Action 4 News on Wednesday show that the crime happened back in February 2009.
Valadez was 18 years old at the time when he allegedly had sex with a 13-year-old girl.
Detectives collected DNA evidence from the girl's body but records show she was afraid to get in trouble.
Court records show that the girl lied to her mother and made up the name of a 16-year-old boy who she claimed she had sex with instead.
The case remained inactive until May of this year when DNA of Valadez taken at a crime scene off Primrose Avenue matched the sexual abuse case.
Detectives spoke with the victim, who is now 18 years old. She identified Valadez in a photo lineup and said she now wants to press charges.
Under Texas state law, victims of sexual abuse have until their 28th birthday to press charges.
Valadez remains in custody at the Hidalgo County Jail under a $150,000 dollar bond.
