Print. Ready. Aim. Fire.
A York machinist has overcome a problem with 3-D printed guns: ammunition that will not cause the gun to explode.
Michael Crumling has developed a thick-walled cartridge that will absorb the impact of explosion. His machined cartridges can be reloaded to use repeatedly, reportsWired.com.
Inexpensive home 3-D printers have been available for a couple of years. They allow the user to create an infinite array of objects with the push of a button. Dresses, shoes and bathing suits are among the objects that have been printed.
Last year, a Texas law student printed and tested a rudimentary handgun made on a 3-printer.
He posted the design online, prompting the U.S. State Department to demand he remove it.
Law enforcement agencies and gun control advocates have warned against the proliferation of guns from technology that allows anyone to make one.
Yet, there was a practical matter holding back the use of 3-D guns. In repeated demonstrations online, law enforcement agencies showed them exploding when fired.
Crumling’s invention moves the development of 3-D guns forward.
“That’s the main reason I developed these, and that’s the next step,” Crumling told Wired. “This is a building block for the future of 3-D printed firearms that will enable people to develop semiautomatic and—if you had the proper legal paperwork—even fully automatic weapons.”
One drawback: Crumling told Wired it takes him about one hour to produce each machined shell casing. He has no plans to sell the shells, he said.
Lancaster Mayor Rick Gray, chairman of the Pennsylvania chapter of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns and a gun control advocate, did not immediately return a call for comment this morning.
