Crash & Burn: Argentina’s Vehicle Production Fell 22% in 2014

1/8/2015

BUENOS AIRES – Argentina’s automotive industry produced 617,329 units in 2014, a 22 percent decline from the previous year, the ADEFA automakers association said on Wednesday.

Vehicle exports fell 17.4 percent last year to 357,847 units.

“While 2014 ended with pronounced declines in the principal variables, we must not forget that the level of comparison with 2013 is very high, fundamentally in regard to sales,” said ADEFA’s president, Isela Costantini.

The final months of last year saw a “deceleration” of the negative trends that points to the possibility of “returning to the growth path of recent years,” she said.

“The efforts for 2014 should be orientated to the continuing improvement of competitiveness, and to certainty about the availability of hard currency to ensure a level of activity superior to that of 2014,” Costantini said, alluding to shortages of dollars that hampered the sector last year.

Other goals for this year include “the development of suppliers, and greater international projection, particularly in the strategic relationship with Brazil and Mexico,” the ADEFA president said.
