Can "modified, limited hangout," "twisting slowly, slowly in the wind" and "stonewalling" be far behind?
President Obama went to the mattresses yesterday, having his White House Counsel refuse a House subpoena. "Executive privilege" in the pursuit of a cover-up is back. Clinton and RN would be proud. Sam Stein at the Huffington Post shows an admirable willingness to jump into a huge story where the bigs are AP-dependent and Politico has only a dozen more Cain stories to run. (OK, Politico does have one story buried deep on the site under the avalanche of Cain headers, which notes that "W.H. to House: Solyndra subpoenas go to far." That's a grabber.)
An enterprizing acquisitions editor would be offering Mr. Stein or a similarly situated reporter a big advance to have a blockbuster ready to publish on October 1.
There's Woodward-Bernstein possibilities in Solyndra/Fast & Furious, but the covering-up president and attorney general and various lower level employees are all Dems so the Beltway-Manhattan media elite will drag their feet if they move them at all.
While the president was piling up sandbags yesterday, Mitt Romney took on Social Security and Medicare. Paul Ryan among others was pleased, and the contrast between the two likely contenders for the Oval Office in 2013 grows increasingly sharp. Texas Governor Rick Perry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are struggling against a GOP that generally wants to get to the main event and spend the next 11 months hammering the president on his many and manifest failures. Perhaps the only way to catch Romney will be to demonstrate a superior ability to beat Obama on Social Security, Medicare and America's collapsing position in the world.
