Sex book found in 5th grade classroom

December 5, 2013

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -
A Williamson County couple is upset after their daughter, a fifth grade student at Freedom Intermediate School in Franklin, found a sex book in her homeroom class.

"You're just kind of shocked, that's so foreign. Who puts a sex book in a kid's classroom?" said Vanessa Turner, whose daughter discovered the book titled "Switch B*tch" on a bookshelf in the classroom while looking for another book to read.

"She said I thought it was about dogs but I looked at the back and it talked about group sex and wife swapping," Turner said. "I've never heard of such a thing. I've worked with kids before and I thought, ‘Why? Why? Why was that book in the room?'"

The book, written by Roald Dahl and first published in the early 1970s for Playboy magazine, details group sex and wife swapping.  The book contains graphic language and depicts sex scenes.

The school's principal Dr. Louise Larkin told News 2 the book was included in a box of books given to one of her teachers by another teacher in another district.

Larkin said her teacher didn't look closely at all of the books inside the box, but said it might have been included with other books written by Dahl who also authored children's books such as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Matilda" and James and the Giant Peach."

The explanation, however, isn't good enough for Vanessa Turner and her husband Jonathan.

"For us as parents we're concerned that the school isn't following its own policy." she said. "It is school board policy for the principal to check the book and the teacher checks the book before it goes to the shelf."

The school's principal added disciplinary action has been taken.
