Michigan band teacher suspended after duct-taping student to improve posture

The Jefferson High School teacher is on paid administrative leave after a student complained, despite an upcoming band trip to Disney World in April.

A Monroe, Mich., band teacher is on paid administrative leave because he reportedly duct-taped a student’s ankles to a chair.

Parents identified the Jefferson High School teacher as Brian Sullivan.
He is suspected of restraining a female student’s ankles to improve her posture during class because she wouldn’t keep her feet flat on the floor while playing her instrument, according to the Monroe News.
The student was wearing boots and jeans during the incident.
“You just can’t do that kind of stuff to kids anymore,” said Debbie Barron, a band booster. “But I don’t think he should lose his job.”
The suspension has jeopardized the band’s trip to Disney World next month, Barron told the newspaper.
The students are expected to leave on April 9.
“The kids have worked very hard for this trip all year,” Barron added.

The superintendent of Jefferson Schools received a complaint last week that a student was upset over “corrective measures,” the newspaper reported.
The incident was reported by another student and not the girl Sullivan taped, Barron said.
The district did not identify the teacher, but released a statement saying he could not have contact with students or be on school property.
Some students at Jefferson High School are protesting the dismissal by handing out fliers and petitioning the school to bring Sullivan back.
