Allegheny County is offering $500 in cash and $200 gift cards to residents who dispose of woodstoves and outdoor wood-fired boilers that do not comply with national emission standards.
This is the second year of the county's bounty program for non-Phase II boilers and uncertified woodstoves. Officials are trying to rid the county of woodstoves and boilers manufactured before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency set emission standards for the equipment.
Last year, residents turned in one boiler and 59 woodstoves, according to the county.
This year, up to five boilers can be exchanged for $500. The county will accept 200 woodstoves in exchange for $200 gift cards. The bounty program is funded by a $75,000 grant from the Allegheny County Clear Air Fund.
