Progressive infiltration of Appalachia: MoveOn members to gather downtown in Asheville Monday to demand Gov. McCrory expand Medicaid

04/01/2014

Here's the press release from MoveOn:

Monday is the Obamacare enrollment deadline and local MoveOn members and area residents will gather at Pritchard Park to attend "Health Care for All". They will gather with signs and flyers in a high-traffic area to remind people that Republicans are responsible for blocking more than 5 million people from getting health coverage by refusing to accept federal money to expand Medicaid. In NC 318,000 are not able to receive health coverage!

Attendees will be asking drivers to honk their horns for health care, and giving flyers to pedestrians with more details on how they can join the fight. They are there to demand that Governor McCrory and Republican legislators agree to accept federal Medicaid funding. This event is part of national days of action in support of Medicaid expansion and affordable health care access. Seventy-five events have been planned nationwide.

As many as five million Americans are currently being denied access to affordable health care because Republicans in nearly two dozen states have refused to expand Medicaid. Expanding Medicaid would be a huge bargain for North Carolina, 100% of the costs would be borne by the federal government through 2016, and 90% thereafter, 318,000 residents would benefit, according to an estimate from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The local organizer of the event, Cheryl Orengo said she decided to plan an event in support of Medicaid expansion because, “Accepting federal Medicaid funds is not only a smart economic move for our state, but ensuring that all North Carolinians have access to affordable health care is the right thing to do.”

WHAT: MoveOn Members will be gathering to hear local health care speakers and have a “honk and wave” event with signs and handing out fliers.

WHERE: Pritchard Park, downtown Asheville NC

WHEN: Monday, March 31 at 5pm
