Happy Father's Day Son!: Father accidentally lodges fishing hook into son's eye

6/17/2014

Pavement turns to dirt west on Hudson Road off Sam Houston Boulevard in San Benito.
A stretch of water there is a local spot for fishing.
It's also where a little boy nearly lost his eye in what his aunt calls a freak accident on Sunday.
Jeanette Marez Guerra shares what happened in an interview via Skype from a hospital in San Antonio.
"When they were already heading home, they stopped by that Resaca off of Hudson Road and they noticed a fishing line or like a fishing net that was stuck or tangled," she told Action 4's Ryan Wolf.  "And so they decided to try and get it
untangled."
Unbeknownst to Alfredo Marez, his 11-year-old son had gotten out of the vehicle and followed behind him to see what he was doing.
When the father tugged on the line to free it from the water, the hook landed right in his son's eye, according to Jeanette.
"It was heart-stopping like he said," Jeanette recalled.  "Right at the moment he saw it, it was like it all happened in slow motion for him."
Ram Marez is initially rushed to a Harlingen hospital where a doctor successfully removed the hook from his left eye.
"But they wanted to make sure there wasn't any fragments left behind in the eye and make sure there wasn't any permanent damage," the boy's aunt said.
So the soon-to-be 5th grader in the San Benito CISD is sent to San Antonio where he receives a number of cat scans and eye exams.
"We're just praying for the best and hoping he will be able to have full vision in his eye," Jeanette said.
"You made it very clear that this was just a freak accident, but what would you say is the take away message for other families who perhaps finds themselves in a similar situation?" Ryan asked her.
"I would say, always safety first," she responded.  "Just always be aware of your surroundings."
Ram was released from the hospital Monday afternoon.
He has to return to San Antonio on Friday for more exams to ensure there is no permanent damage.
Alfredo Mares is a single father of 3 kids and is in need of help with travel expenses to help his son.
