Peña Nieto Says California Is an Example to Follow in Immigrant Treatment

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has praised the respect shown by the state of California towards immigrants and has encouraged other states to follow its example.

“Both the Governor of California (Jerry Brown) and the Congress have supported measures of respect for the immigrant population, even for those who do not have a legal stay in the United States,” Peña Nieto said in statements to the media in Sacramento late Tuesday at the end of his two-day visit to California.

“This speaks of a new attitude and a new openness and respect for cultural diversity,” said Pena Nieto, who also hoped that the Californian example extends so that “a similar attitude on the part of other states” can be achieved.

The Mexican leader reiterated his support for immigration reforms in the United States and insisted that his country wants to promote an agreement on that front, with “absolute respect” for the sovereignty of the U.S.

“We want the immigration reform to flourish,” said Peña Nieto, who believes that it is a matter “of justice” for immigrants living in the United States, who “contribute to the development of this nation.”

Peña Nieto’s visit follows that of Brown to Mexico last July and highlights the good relations between the Latin American country and California, home to more than 11 million people of Mexican origin, according to official figures.

“It was a short but productive visit,” Peña Nieto said, adding that he had discussed with Brown steps to expedite border traffic.

Nieto’s visit coincides with the publication on Wednesday of a new survey by the Pew Research Center based in Washington which shows that the economic reform on the Mexican leader’s political agenda is “decidedly unpopular.”

According to the survey conducted between April 21 and May 2 among 1,000 Mexican adults, only 37 percent of the population approves of Peña Nieto’s economic management.

“Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has been praised internationally for his ambitious reforms but a new survey by the Pew Research Center shows that his positive domestic image is changing and a key component of his political agenda, economic reform, is decidedly unpopular,” the Pew Center said in a statement.

The survey has a margin of error of 4 percent.
