NEW DELHI – A team of Indian doctors has removed the 36-year-old skeleton of a fetus from the body of a woman in a bizarre case of ectopic pregnancy in which the embryo implants outside the uterus, medical sources revealed on Tuesday.
The four-hour long operation took place last Thursday in the Lata Mangeshkar Hospital in Nagpur in the central state of Maharasthra.
The woman, Kantabai Gunvant Thakre, a 60-year-old resident of Pipariya in the neighboring state of Madhya Pradesh, had come to the doctor last week complaining of a consistent pain in her abdomen for two months.
An MRI revealed the skeleton that had been inside the woman since she had an ectopic pregnancy in which the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, Dr. Murtaza Akhtar, Head of Surgery at the hospital, told the PTI news agency.
Doctors extracted the skeleton encapsulated in a calcified sac between the uterus, the intestines and the urinary bladder of the woman, who was reported to be recovering rapidly after the operation.
