EU’s Mogherini Calls for Combating Terrorism While Respecting Islam
BRUSSELS – The European Union Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, said the fight against jihadist terror can be waged while maintaining respect for Islam, and assuming “full responsibility for what we do and what we say.”
“What we need to do is face terrorism while respecting Islam,” Mogherini said on her arrival Monday at a meeting of EU foreign ministers held to address the terrorist threat following the attacks in Paris.
“Respect is also one of the core values of the European Union. Drawing the line between freedom of speech and respect has always been one of the main philosophical dilemmas,” she added.
In her opinion, “we need to look at that very carefully these days as we see what is happening in many parts of the world.”
After the attack on the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, and a supermarket in Paris, where 17 people were killed, and a raid in Belgium that uncovered a jihadist cell about to launch attacks on police-related targets, the EU is seeing new tools to be used against Islamist terrorism.
Mogherini noted that the Council is discussing “how to counter terrorism not only in Europe but also in other parts of the world,” including North Africa.
“The threat is not only the one we faced in Paris, but also spreading in many other parts of the world, starting from Muslim countries,” she said and called for “strengthening our way of cooperating together, first of all with Arab countries but also internally...”
“We need to share information more, we need to cooperate more also among member states,” she added.
She noted the discussion will also consider “how to increase the level of cooperation on counter terrorism with our partners and the countries in the region that share the same concerns as we do.”
EU sources said it was not expected that the ministers will take any policy decisions on Monday, but instead will exchange viewpoints, and Mogherini will preview the informal meeting of EU leaders to be held Feb. 12 in Brussels.
According to Mogherini, terrorism is not “an issue between Europe or the West and Islam” because “terrorist attacks are targeting most of all Muslims in the world.”
“We need an alliance, a dialogue to face the issue together,” Mogherini said.
