FBI releases statistics on law enforcement officers killed nationwide

The number of officers killed in 2014 went up, but there has actually been a drop in the total number of assaults against officers nationwide over the past decade.
According to the national law enforcement memorial in Washington, there were more than 60,000 assaults on officers in 2004 and 59 officers were killed in shootings that year.
By 2013 the number dropped to more than 51,000 assaults with 32 officers killed in shootings.
A total number of assaults for 2014 has not been determined at this time, but we do know that 50 officers were killed in shootings last year.
