"Socialist Soccer": Arsenal Goalkeeper Szczesny Fined $30,403 for Smoking

1/7/2015

LONDON – Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was fined £20,000 ($30,403) after being caught smoking in the locker room showers following a defeat against Southampton during the Premier League’s 20th round.

The Gunners’ keeper gave a poor performance in the high-stakes match, as both goals scored by Southampton derived from two clear mistakes by the Polish goalie, British media reported.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger then decided to drop Szczesny from Sunday’s FA Cup match against Hull, after finding out that the 24-year-old netkeeper had been caught smoking in the showers.

It was the Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina who defended Arsenal’s goal instead in the 2-0 win over Hull on Sunday, with Szczesny excluded even from the bench.

The young Polish international player isn’t the only Gunner who has been caught smoking this season: English midfielder Jack Wilshere was pictured smoking in Las Vegas while on vacation last summer, following the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
