We Need Self-Governing Children

10/05/13

While it is seen that for the purpose of gaining a livelihood, an elaborate preparation is needed, it appears to be thought that for the bringing up of children, no preparation whatever is needed. In the absence of this preparation, the management of children, and more especially the moral management, is lamentably bad. Parents either never think about the matter at all, or else their conclusions are crude, and inconsistent. In most cases, and especially on the part of mothers, the treatment adopted on every occasion is that which the impulse of the moment prompts: it springs not from any reasoned-out conviction as to what will most conduce to the child’s welfare, but merely expresses the passing parental feelings, whether good or ill; and varies from hour to hour as these feelings vary. Or if these blind dictates of passion are supplemented by any definite doctrines and methods, they are those that have been handed down from the past, or those suggested by the remembrances of childhood, or those adopted from nurses and servants — methods devised not by the enlightenment, but by the ignorance of the time.

Meet A Poor Cancer Girl Harry Reid Is Letting Die By Refusing To Fund The NIH

10/05/13

*Notice that Cooper asked her, “what would you say to Congress given the chance?” He never mentions that Congress has sent a bill to Harry Reid and the democrats that specifically asked for coverage for the NIH.
It is a lie by omission…
The Right Scoop – Anderson Cooper interviewed Michelle Langbhen last night who is a part of the NIH clinical that is now put on hold because of the government shutdown. She says her body isn’t responding that well to Chemo any more and that she must look for other drugs to help her body fight this cancer. She was counting on the NIH clinicals to start soon and now they have been delayed.
This is the face and the voice of a cancer patient that needs help and she is the reason Harry Reid should accept the House’s limited CR to fund the NIH.

Follow Up: Son of Johnston Gang leader jailed for selling methamphetamine to cop

10/04/13

This is a follow up from an article echoed here early last year about the latest arrest of this wonderful piece of work and his notorious family. For background information please read here (Hearing for Bruce Johnston Jr. stirs memories of notorious gang)

Bruce Johnston Jr.
The son of one of Lancaster County's most notorious crime bosses admitted Thursday to selling meth to an undercover officer.

Bruce Alfred Johnston Jr., 55, will spend 7 to 14 years in state prison for the sales last year in southern Lancaster County, according to a local judge's order.

Years ago, Johnston Jr. operated, under his father's watch, the Kiddie Gang, a group of teen thieves.

His father, Bruce Johnston Sr. was eventually convicted of numerous murders and thefts in Chester and Lancaster counties and beyond.

"Little Bruce" provided damaging testimony in 1978 that put his father and two uncles — heads of the Johnston Gang — behind bars for life.

A year earlier, he survived a hit, allegedly ordered by his father, despite being shot eight times. His girlfriend was killed in the attack.

Following sensational trials of the brothers that included tales of paid hits and stolen John Deere tractors and Chevrolet Corvettes, Bruce Jr. was placed in the witness-protection program. He had lived in Wisconsin and North Carolina.

He resurfaced last December when he was caught selling methamphetamine to an undercover cop at a McDonald's in Gap.

He was caught selling drugs several more times through January.

On Thursday, Lancaster County Judge Dennis Reinaker ordered the state-prison term after Johnston pleaded guilty to numerous felonies.

Johnston Jr. and his father were portrayed — by Sean Penn and Christopher Walken, respectively — in the hit 1986 movie, "At Close Range."

Decades removed from the criminal acts that gave the Johnstons notoriety, Johnston Jr. appeared recently in court with gray hair and beard, walking with a limp.

2 Coal Fired Power Plants in Western Pa to Close Thanks to Obama's Regulations

10/04/13

FirstEnergy says it will close two coal-fired power plants in southwestern Pennsylvania as scheduled next week with no expectations that they will be sold or reopened under stricter environmental regulations.

"Those plants are losing money today and will lose money in the future. Our plans are not to run those units again," company president James Lash told state lawmakers at a Thursday hearing.

Lash said no potential buyers have come forward for the 370-megawatt Mitchell Power Station in Washington County or the 1,710-megawqatt Hatfield's Ferry Power Station in Greene County. He said the company has made job offers within its system to 140 of 175 union workers affected.

Members of the House Consumer Affairs Committee are considering testimony on the effects of the closures on the region's electric grid.

Valley Forge-based PJM Interconnection, which distributes electricity to Pennsylvania and 12 other states, said last month it saw "no system reliability problems" stemming from the planned Oct. 9 deactivation of the plants.

Pamela Witmer, a member of the state Public Utility Commission, testified that although FirstEnergy gave the 90 days required to review the reliability of service, she still worried that PJM might not have had enough time to assess the effects of losing 2,000 megawatts of power, which help supply 1.5 million Pennsylvania homes each year.

Michael Kormos, PJM executive first vice president of operations, said new natural gas plants in the large grid will be able to compensate for the loss of any coal-fired plants.

"We are very confident these units can retire," Kormos said

The company has cited weak demand, low electricity prices and the costs of complying with environmental regulations for the decision to close the plants.

Lash said electricity prices have dropped 10 percent from summer to fall and the cost of natural gas remains at historic low levels because of the abundance of gas from supplies, such as the Marcellus shale reserves. He said it would take $270 million to bring the plants into compliance with environmental regulations.

Attention to Sears Automotive Management

10/04/13

Dear Sears,

What the hell is this?

David, I thought you might be interested in my experience getting new tires at Sears today. They have WIFI so I thought I would do a little shopping since it is payday. Turn out they block Midway and Brownell's because of "Weapons." Ironically, they don't block Dick's, which also sells weapons and has a store in the same mall.  See the attached screen shots.

I mentioned my dissatisfaction to the salesman, but he was pretty dismissive. Since the tires were already installed there wasn't much I could do. I do plan to contact management and express my dismay and explain to them that next time I need service I'll be checking their WIFI access first. No access to "Weapons," no business for Sears.

They sure have fallen a long way:

We'll see if the clerk who receives my contact form inquiry is smart enough to forward it to someone smart enough to rectify things.

That's their phone number, by the way.  They've got a hell of a lot of nerve REQUIRING it just to send them a form email.

Y'know, they really don't look like they can afford to p!$$ too many customers off.

Why "equality" must die

10/04/13

Take a look at the following list and tell me if anything strikes you:
  • Prudence
  • Justice
  • Temperance
  • Courage
  • Faith
  • Hope
  • Charity
Viewing these, the Seven Cardinal Virtues, anything make an impression? Okay, now try the Seven Heavenly Virtues of:
  • Chastity
  • Temperance
  • Charity
  • Diligence
  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Humility
Anything? What strikes me is that equality is not among them.

Scour great works, such as the Bible, and you won't find much talk of equality – that is, unless you consider The Communist Manifesto a great work.

Unreal: Obama Says Workers Who Shut Down a Factory Until Demands Met Would Be Fired

10/04/13

Q: Can I be fired for being on strike?
A: It is illegal for the employer to fire anyone for participating in a concerted action like a strike. This means that permanent, probationary, and extra help workers including student workers are protected. Before members agree to return to work, the union will negotiate an “amnesty agreement” to protect all supporters.
Someone should tell the President.
But then, he’s never really been concerned with what’s legal and what isn’t, has he?

The California politician, chairman of the House Oversight Committee pursuing an inquiry into the September 11, 2012 terror-attack, has just returned from a fact-finding trek to the North African nation. A leaked State Department email revealed officials were deeply concerned about Issa’s safety abroad.

Coming to a Theater Near You: Regulations, Mandates & Higher Ticket Prices

10/04/13

"The government is readying new regulations that will require theaters to install equipment that will enable deaf and blind patrons to enjoy the movie experience just like hearing and seeing patrons. For the seeing impaired, there are headsets that verbally narrate the action on the screen. For those with hearing loss, glasses that provide closed captioning will help them keep up with the dialogue.  This equipment requires that theaters convert to digital, which most theaters (about 90 percent) have already done, at a cost of approximately $70,000 per screen."

$175 premium for a young, healthy student? Thanks, Obamacare!

American media outlets were finally able to track down a mythical creature — a person who actually signed up for the Obamacare exchanges online.
But that person, Chad Henderson, admitted to the Washington Post that the premium for the plan he enrolled in was $175. Ouch! Wasn’t Obamacare supposed to lower premiums?
Henderson’s going to pay a $175 premium and he won’t even receive vision or dental insurance. He has contacts, so not having vision insurance is kind of a bum deal.
Henderson, as far as we know a healthy, 21-year-old college student at Chattanooga State Community College who lives in Flintstone, Ga., and works part-time at a day-care center, did not qualify for tax credits to purchase insurance, according to the Post.
