HOPE: Bright uses gun raffle in S.C.Senate race to unseat progressive Graham

01.24.2014

One of the Republicans looking to knock off incumbent U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham is using a gun giveaway to find potential supporters.

State Sen. Lee Bright of Spartanburg is giving away an AR-15 rifle to one of the potentially thousands of people he's inviting to take part in his Internet raffle.
The contest is free to enter, but it also requires entrants to give their names, phone numbers and emails as Second Amendment-supportive voters heading into the June primary.
"President Obama wants it banned. But now's your chance to win an AR-15 rifle!" Bright's announcement said.
Bright said the idea came from similar giveaways used in other campaigns he's seen for high office.
It's "to raise awareness that we are more pro-gun than Lindsey Graham," he said.
The weapon comes from the Palmetto State Armory gun sellers. It retails upwards of $750 each, a salesman said Thursday, depending on its features.
Bright said campaign cash will pay for the gun. The random name drawing is set for Feb. 15.
The Second Amendment already is expected to feature prominently in the June GOP primary. Earlier this week, Graham, R-S.C., took part in a gun locks event in Columbia aimed at keeping guns out of the reach of children.
"Project Child Safe" and gun manufacturers say the increased use of locks has cut down on accidents, officials said during the event.
Also in the GOP Senate race are Orangeburg attorney Bill Connnor, Upstate businessman Richard Cash and Citadel graduate and Lowcountry public relations businesswoman Nancy Mace.
