Zemir Begic, a Bosnian man who moved to St. Louis this year, was beaten to death by black and Hispanic assailants because he was white, according to protesters who have taken to the streets since his murder.
Mr. Begic was attacked by three teens wielding hammers yesterday. They repeatedly struck Mr. Begic in the “head, abdomen, face, and mouth.”
He died after being rushed to St. Louis University Hospital.
Protesters took to the street last night to bring attention to and denounce the attack. A number believe that it was racially motivated because Mr. Begic was white and his attackers were all minorities. More than that, the murder took place less than 20 miles away from where Michael Brown was shot by officer Darren Wilson.
Denisa Begic, Mr. Begic’s sister, stated that some of the protesters feel that the attack occurred because of the color of her brother’s skin.
But, she said, even if that were true, her brother would love everyone, regardless of race. “He loved everybody,” she said. “I don’t know what to think of it. It’s so wrong what they did. They didn’t just hurt Zemir’s family. They also hurt their own family because I’m pretty sure their moms will never see them again.”
“He loved America,” she added. “We come from Bosnia because we were getting killed and our homes and families were getting destroyed. Never in my life did I think he would get murdered.”
In the end, she hopes the people who perpetrated the attack are caught and put on trial. “I hope justice is served for my brother because he didn’t deserve this at all,” she said.
