Del Bosque: Extremist Fans Use Sports to Get Attention
MADRID – Spanish national team coach Vicente Del Bosque described on Tuesday the deadly violence between hundreds of supporters of Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruña as irrational and illogical, saying extremist fans use sports to call attention to themselves.
“It is difficult to explain to those who view sports as something different,” Del Bosque said during an event held in Madrid.
The Spanish coach stressed that sporting events should be held in a family-friendly setting and added that he expects authorities will take the necessary measures to put an end to such violent acts.
The street battle began a few hours before the start of the La Liga match between Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruña on Sunday and involved around 200 people, many of them armed with knives, baseball bats and crowbars.
The violence resulted in the death of a 43-year-old Deportivo fan, Francisco Romero, who was beaten with a one-inch-thick iron bar that caused traumatic brain injury and ruptured his spleen.
He was then either thrown or fell into the Manzanares river, from which he was rescued and taken to the hospital. He died at the clinic, unable to recover from cardiac arrest. Eleven others were injured in the violent confrontations.
