LIMA – Greenpeace executive director Kumi Naidoo is to appear Thursday before the public prosecutor’s office in Peru for damages to the historic Nazca Lines a week ago by activists from his organization, according to a statement by the Public Ministry.
Naidoo will be in Nazca, 460 kilometers (286 miles) from Lima, as part of the investigation being conducted by public prosecutor Patricia Begazo, the statement released Wednesday said.
Culture Minister Diana Alvarez Calderon met with Naidoo on Monday and the latter apologized for the damages caused to the UNESCO World Heritage site, but refused to identify the perpetrators.
The activists wrote a message in bright yellow about climate change near the “Colibri” figure, which represents a hummingbird.
The Colibri is one of the most recognized geoglyphs of the Nazca Lines which because of their size can only be properly appreciated from an aerial perspective.
The geoglyphs are located in the Ica desert and occupy about 780 square kilometers (301 square miles).
Those implicated in the case fled Peru last week after a court rejected the prosecution’s petition to prevent their exit because the document did not have an address for the notification to be sent.
The country’s authorities have announced that they will seek to extradite the Greenpeace members.
Begazo also said Wednesday that her office has once again submitted the investigation file, accusing the activists of a crime against a world heritage site which according to Peruvian law is punishable by up to eight years in prison.
She added that the court must send a notification to the members of the environmental group which can be done by publishing the warrant in the official daily or the institution’s website.
The Greenpeace director told Alvarez Calderon that a lawyer would be appointed to cooperate with Peruvian investigators.
