WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed an outbreak of avian flu in wild birds in Washington state.
But in its announcement Tuesday, the department said there was no need for a health alert at the moment.
The H5N2 strain of bird flu was detected in northern pintail ducks, while the H5N8 subtype was found in a captive gyrfalcon that was fed with infected wild birds, the USDA said.
The department also said that the virus has not been found in birds meant for human consumption anywhere in the United States, so there is no immediate alert for these two strains.
Cases of both H5N2 and H5N8 have recently been registered in other countries, including the Netherlands and Germany. However, there have been no cases of humans being infected so far.
The United States stepped up its vigilance following a case of H5N2 avian influenza in domestic poultry in Canada.
On Dec. 2, Canadian authorities announced the outbreak of bird flu in two poultry farms located in the towns of Abbotsford and Chilliwack in British Columbia which borders Washington state.
