A mother is accused of leaving her three children inside a running vehicle while she went shopping for presents.
Chritsy Alvarado was arrested on three counts of child endangerment after children were left inside her vehicle while she went to buy presents at Ross and wrapping paper at Dollar Tree, police said.
Police said the vehicle was left running, and the children could have tried to “drive off or accidentally move the transmission gear bar and cause an accident,”, according to an offense report by McAllen police.
The alleged crime happened on Saturday, July 19th around 5:15 in the evening on 10th Street.
A witness saw the three children alone in the Lincoln Aviator before she called police.
Officers with the McAllen Police Department showed up to the scene and witnessed the children were without adult supervision.
Police documented the children left unattended. One of the children has a hearing and speaking disability, and he would not be able to call for assistance if needed, police said.
One of the children attempted to roll up the window to the SUV when authorities showed up, but a police officer was able to prevent them from locking themselves inside.
The child also “drew a set of handcuffs and a line (through) it” in an attempt to tell officers not to arrest his mother.
Alvarado then was seen running from Dollar Tree towards her vehicle.
Authorities said she apologized, and she did not get the children off from the vehicle because she didn’t want them asking her for toys.
The mother allegedly told authorities it was an accident, and police documented “leaving her children in a vehicle to go shopping was not an accident.”
At the scene, authorities documented the baby had “several red dots” on his body.
Alvarado then called her mother who took custody of the 1-year-old, 3-year-old and 8-year-old.
When being transported in the back of a police unit, the mother allegedly told authorities the red dots were scabies, a skin condition caused by mites.
A store receipt was secured as evidence, and Alavardo was transported to the city jail in McAllen.
The 25-year-old mother was charged with abandoning/endangering the children.
Alvarado bond was set at $2,500, and she bonded out of jail on July 22nd.
