A man is behind bars after trying to cross cocaine past the border patrol checkpoint in Sarita.
Ernesto Mendoza-Gil is accused of having about 21.4 pounds of cocaine hidden within the back doors of a Chevy Impala he was driving.
The doors felt heavier than usual, which prompted agents to conduct a secondary inspection.
They used a mobile x-ray, and discovered the eight bundles of drug with the rear doors of the car.
Mendoza-Gil was also in possession of $600, and he was arrested on July 13, 2014.
He was booked into the Cameron County Jail on the felony charge for intent to distribute the cocaine.
Mendoza-Gil has a preliminary hearing set for Thursday, July 17th at 1:30 p.m., where he will appear before Magistrate Judge Ignacio Torteya III.
He is being held without bond by the U.S. Marshals.
